PHYSIOLOGY TEST
What happens to stroke volume during exercise as you increase you intensity
from 20 to 40% of your VO2max? from 60 to 80%?
As the intensity increases so does the SV because your body need more oxygen and
nourishment
- between 60-80 it will plateau
What is the effect of body positioning on stroke volume and heart rate?
Stroke volume during max exercise only slightly higher than supine stroke volume.
What will the effect of a low blood pressure be on stroke volume? Why?
• Stroke volume decreases when there is low blood pressure
- low blood pressure equals low blood volume which equals low pre load which then
decreases stroke volume.
What is the Fick principle and how does it relate to cardiovascular and respiratory
systems?
vo2max=cardiac output(a-v 02uptake)
What percent of cardiac output do working muscles receive during high intensity
exercise?
80-85% of cardiac output.
What are some of the contributors to ventilator regulation during exercise?
• Immediate Increase in ventilation begins before muscle contractions and anticipatory
responses from central command
• Gradual second phase of increase in ventilation is driven by chemical changes in
arterial blood,
- increase in CO2 H+ sense by chemoreceptors and movement sensed by
mechanoreceptors
Describe the relationship between lactate threshold and ventilatory threshold.
• The ventilator threshold occurs because the decrease in blood ph. When the muscles
exercise at low intensity, very little lactate is produced.

Lactate, like ventilation is produced at high intensity exercise. the transition between the
production of small amount and large amounts of lactate occurs over small range of
intensities and this is where the ventilator threshold comes in. the lactate production is
associated with a decreases in ph is then buffered by bicarbonate, resulting in an
increase in blood pCO2. Chemoreceptors then stimulate the brain to increase
ventilation which returns pCO2 to normal.
What is oxygen deficit and EPOC? How do they influence ventilation during and
after exercise?
oxygen deficit
the period during exercise when the O2 delivered to the muscles is less than that
required for ATP to be produced aerobically.
EPOC
(excess Postexercise oxygen consumption): this is needed to return the body back to
preexisting levels
