with The Elizabethans, 1580–1603 – Exam Overview
Exam Date: Tuesday, 4 June 2024 – Afternoon Session
The GCSE History B (Schools History Project) J411/18 exam will assess students' understanding of
migration to Britain from c.1250 to the present, alongside a focused study of the Elizabethan period
(1580–1603). This exam will require students to explore key historical events, trends, and
developments related to migration, and the social, political, and economic impacts of migration on
Britain over the centuries. Additionally, students will examine the Elizabethan era, particularly
focusing on the challenges faced by Elizabeth I's government, societal norms, and cultural
developments.
Key Topics and Themes:
1. Migration to Britain, c.1250 to Present:
o Patterns of Migration: The diverse groups that migrated to Britain, including refugees,
traders, and settlers. The causes and reasons for migration, such as economic
opportunities, religious freedom, or escaping persecution.
o Impact of Migration: How migrant communities have shaped British society in terms
of culture, economy, and identity. Consideration of the challenges migrants faced and
the impact on local populations.
o Changing Attitudes Towards Migration: The evolution of public attitudes, policies,
and government responses to migrants over time.
2. The Elizabethans, 1580–1603:
o The Reign of Elizabeth I: Key political and social events during the reign of Elizabeth
I, including religious conflicts, foreign policy, and challenges to her authority.
o The Elizabethan Society: Social hierarchy, life for ordinary people, and the roles of
men and women. Exploration of the culture, art, and theatre during this period.
o The Elizabethan Economy and Trade: Understanding the economic landscape of
Elizabethan England, including exploration, trade expansion, and the establishment of
overseas colonies.
o Religious Changes: The impact of the Protestant Reformation on English society and
politics, and the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in England during this
period.
This exam requires students to demonstrate their ability to analyze historical sources, evaluate different
interpretations, and construct coherent arguments related to migration and Elizabethan history.
Good luck with your studies and exam preparation!
