Chapter 16 ws Questions and Answers
Explain why knowing the difference between a fully-controlled access highway and a
non-controlled access helps to make you a low-risk driver. (p. 321; 2 pts) - answer
Controlled access - vehicles can enter and leave only at designed intersections
Non-controlled access - expressways could have traffic lights, intersections, and
driveways where traffic is able to enter or leave the expressway

Explain the differences between interstate, U.S., and state highways, and their
numbering systems. (pps. 321 & 322; 3 pts) - answer Interstate highway - Controlled
access - vehicles can enter and leave only at designed intersections. The interstate
highway sign is a red, whtie, and blue shield.
U.S. highway - Most of the state highways and U.S. highways have non-controlled
access, which allowed drivers to to enter and leave the highway from any point. There
are intersections with traffic controls to separate crossing traffic, which makes traveling
slower and more dangerous than being on controlled - access freeway.
State Highway - The state highway system is a network of highways existing within the
boundaries of a state. Many of these highways are narrow two - lane roadways in rural
areas.
Numbering system (Figure 2 on p.321) - The even numbered routes run east and west
with the lower numbered routes beginning in the south. The odd numbered routes go
north and south with the lowest numbers beginning on the west coast.

Explain how each type of interchange helps to keep traffic moving. (p.321; 2 pts) -
answer Cloverleaf - is a two-level interchange in which all turns are handled by slip
roads
Diamond - A diamond interchange is a common type of road junction, used where a
controlled-access highway crosses a minor road

Describe the actions that help the driver to merge smoothly while in the acceleration
lane. (p. 327; 2 pts) - answer If entrances have very short acceleration lanes, slow
down to provide the best opportunity to merge. Otherwise you wll be forced to reduce
your sped or come to a stop while on the acceleration lane, which creates a highly
dangerous situation.

Describe a situation on an entrance ramp that might prevent the driver from merging
safely. (p. 327; 1 pt) - answer a closed front zone or merging from the left entrance
ramp

Why is the correct speed so important on the entrance ramp? (p. 325; 1 pt) - answer
Driving more slowly provides time to evaluate zone conditions and to select a gap in the
traffic flow, which allows you to slip into the gap or hole without causing drivers behind
you to brake.
