6 Core values
Working together for patient
it is so integral to every Healthcare professional the patient is
at the center of everything we do whether that be decisions about
treatment about funding or building a new car park in the grounds of the
hospital the patient always comes first. the NHS is made up of an Untold number
of different professionals there's the clinical staff doctors nurses Health
Care assistants physios you name it there's the administrative staff the
managers everyone with their own different Regional areas of
responsibility and potentially differing objectives and priorities but at the end
of the day everyone is work working together for the patients this core
value encompasses the idea of the needs of the patient coming above
organizational boundaries so in healthcare there are lots of different
divides whether that be on Geographic boundaries or organizational boundaries
belonging to different Healthcare systems but this core value
says we all need to work together for what the patient needs you know it
doesn't matter necessarily where the patient lives what treatment they can
access or what health care System what trust Hospital trust they live in and
belong to we need to put the needs of the patient first and make sure they're
getting the best quality Care possible.
Respect & Dignity
Translating that into your professional life as a result of the stresses and strains
sometimes put on Healthcare stuff the individual can be lost in the sea of
numbers and patience and overcrowding this core value is all about remembering
that there is a person at the end of that number there is a person in that bed and they're
not just a patient and there is a person experiencing everything that's happening to
them in hospital being a patient can be a scary experience let's say you're in a car
, 2
crash and you come into a e as an emergency you might have all your clothes cut off so
the doctors can adequately assess you but you're naked in a room full of strangers or if
you're an elderly patient and you fall over and break your hip maybe now you
can't get to the toilet on your own despite a lifetime of taking yourself to
the toilet so you now need someone to help you go to the toilet or use a
bedpan at your bed space every single day the core value of respect and
dignity is all about taking a mindful moment to just remember that there is an
individual sat in front of us and any little things that we can do or big
things to help them as a person through their experience is going to be greatly
appreciated respect as an idea is not just about how we treat someone but it's
also about how we value their opinions and what they say you know if a patient
were to say something's not right we take that comment incredibly seriously
and look into it for example instead of just brushing it off because we didn't
care what patients have to say.
Commitment to quality of care
in the NHS we are about delivering a quality service it's not
just we gave someone health care we want to give them the best possible health
care that we can with the resources available there is a minimum standard of
healthcare quality that we want to deliver you know it's not just about
seeing as many patients as physically possible it's about seeing each patient
and delivering a quality service and Healthcare experience to them a
commitment to this quality means always striving to do better so that means
encouraging feedback from patients from families from other members of Staff
understanding that feedback and acting on that feedback to try and continually
improve the healthcare we're delivering lots of different things can fall under
this umbrella term of quality it can be the safety of the treatment being
delivered it can be the effectiveness of the treatment being delivered it can be
the general patient experience of them being treated under our care all those
things sort of come into the quality that we're delivering and we want to
maximize every single one of them.
Compassion
every Healthcare professional wants to relieve a patient's pain suffering
distress or anxiety and compassion is that foundational pillar that
drives their moral action the core value of compassion includes finding those
small little things that you can do to help a patient that they'll massively
appreciate that isn't necessarily in your job description you know that might
be going to fetch a cup of tea in a sandwich for a patient who's been sat in
a e for six hours and you know that they've definitely missed dinner or it
might be going out of your way to find a spare pair of batteries for a patient's
hearing aid on the ward because you know their hearing aids run out compassion is
about not waiting to be asked to help but doing so anyway because you truly
care about the people and patients in front of you I think this core value can
have one of the biggest impacts on patients experiences when dealing with
