De verwachtingen bij financieel management liggen vooral bij cijfermatige aspecten. Echter, de
cijfermatige prioriteit kan en moet afgezwakt worden met de volgende stelling van van Alphen & Verolme
(2015; 13): “Cijfers zeggen iets en cijfers zeggen niets.”
In de eerste plaats zeggen cijfers iets, daar ze een algemeen beeld geven over hoe het er in een
organisatie aan toe gaat: hoe is het geweest en hoe is de stand van zaken nu? Wat de cijfers vertellen
is een kwantitatieve aanduiding van de prestaties van een organisatie. Op basis van die gegevens
kunnen tendensen en ontwikkelingen worden aangeduid, waarop beslissingen kunnen worden
gebaseerd. Beleidsmatig hebben de cijfers dus een belangrijke waarde.
Echter cijfers zeggen ook niets! Cijfers zijn vooreerst makkelijk te manipuleren. Daarenboven kunnen
voor wie niet met de organisatie vertrouwd is en niet “in de financiële branche” zit cijfers veel lijken te
zeggen, maar dat in feite niet doen. Het is dus afhankelijk van de interpretatie en de situatie.
