Psychopathology
=>DEFINITIONS OF ABNORMALITY

Statistical Infrequency is defined as those behaviours that are extremely rare:
any behaviour found in very few people
STRENGTHS:
- Can be used appropriately eg in standard deviation an IQ lower than 2
deviations from mean would identify a mental disorder
WEAKNESS:
- Unable to distinguish between undesired and desired characteristics
- eg depression is frequent but undesirable or high IQ is infrequent
but desirable
- Cut off between normal and abnormal is subjective

Deviation from social norms is defined as deviation from unstated rules about
how one ought to behave : violating these rules: abnormal
STRENGTHS:
- Distinguish between desirable and undesirable behaviour: takes into
account the effect it has on others
WEAKNESS:
- Varies as time changes e.g homosexuality
- Cannot offer a complete definition as it is related to both context and
degree e.g wearing a bikini at the beach and classroom

Cultural relativism- behaviour cannot be judged unless it is viewed in the context
of the culture in which it originates

Failure to function adequately people are judged on their ability to go about
their daily life,if they can’t do this and are also experiencing distress (or others are
distressed by their behaviour) then they are abnormal
STRENGTHS:
- Allows to view mental disorder from perspective of person experiencing it
- Judged objectively: can dress yourself e.g WHODAS
WEAKNESS:
- Defining if they can function properly depends on who is making the
judgement
- Certain dysfunctional behaviour can be adaptive and functional for the
individual
