M1- Analyse the importance of good citizens respecting
equality and diversity.
When dealing with the topics of equality and diversity, good citizens who respect
the issues are important because it allows local areas to run much more smoothly
and efficiently, therefore allowing the public services to also complete their tasks
much more easily. Good citizens who respect equality and diversity would allow
all races, genders, cultures to coexist in a society peacefully without prejudice or
discrimination. This of course allows diversity and equality to truly thrive in that
community because everyone is living and being treated equally no matter what
their gender, race, culture, sexuality or even disability is. Good citizens are
important to the public services when relating to diversity and equality for
example because it will be less likely that hate crimes and prejudice towards
different types of people will happen. As a good citizen, people learn and adapt to
living with different types of people from different backgrounds. This benefits the
public services, like the police in particular, because they will not be needed to
tackle crimes in relation to diversity and equality, therefore allowing the public
services to be more efficient and using their time to help tackle more
'appropriate' crimes that need attention.
The public services possess certain roles and responsibilities within their duties of
service and every one of them has certain functions which gives them powers to
treat people in a way that they see the world through their own eyes. This can
open the gates for prejudice and lack of respect for diversity and equality. Having
good citizens who respect diversity and equality would ensure that there are no
places for any sort of hateful or intolerant behaviour. Intolerance of different
races, sexualities and faiths can happen in every area where service is provided, in
a retail store, train station, cab etc. which can make people quite unhappy about
the way you have been treated, but having citizens who would stick up for anyone
who is put in a situation where they are not being respected due to their race,
sexuality or faith for example are being stuck up for and supported is
tremendously important to the public services and society as a whole as it
encourages acceptance and tolerance. Stereotypes and discrimination against
people of characteristics or abilities could create a separation and mistrust
between services and society or community. Good citizens make sure to eliminate
