P4: Explain the strategies and communication techniques used with individuals different
needs to overcome different challenges.
CHALLENGES:
There are numerous challenges that could be encountered by individuals who have support needs;
one of the most extensive ones is awareness and knowledge. This is where individuals are not
mindful of the support that they could access and do not have the intellectual knowledge of where
to go for assistance. Individuals with care and support necessities face different types of challenges.
Awareness and knowledge could be when an older person may not be conscious of the financial
support available if they need to transfer into a care home, and so may be concerned about how
they can manage to pay for this type of care. Likewise, if service providers are not mindful of the
recent guidance or do not continually refer to it, they will not change their way of working, so those
they care for will not benefit from the guidance. Awareness and knowledge is a challenge because
it’s difficult for some people to be alert of others sentiments and how to deal with certain situations.
Methods to recognise challenges could be a focus group and this is where you speak to a group of
people about why you feel it’s a challenge. Though, if you’re not comfortable about talking in a
group you can have one to one with an individual and talk about the same ideas and thoughts you
would in a focus group. Conversely, you could fill out a questionnaire if you don’t feel comfortable
talking to someone at all and it can be anonymous so it isn’t embarrassing you.
Maria may have challenges due to her lack of awareness and knowledge of services available to
support her and her mother. Maria may also lack knowledge about the sleeping tablets which she
consumes; this may be the reason as to why it is not being effective for her even after a year of
taking them. Maria may have had difficulty understanding the brochure of her tablets due to the
way it was sentenced which may have meant that she took the tablets how she may take other
tablets which could have been the incorrect way to consume them. Maria may also lack knowledge
in how nursing homes work for the elderly and she may not know how her mother could receive
specialist dementia care. There may have been some stigma surrounding sending elderly parents to
nursing homes which may have put Maria off sending her mother there, despite how much she gets
affected by it. For example, she may believe that her mother could be treated badly in the nursing
home which could be why she’s against the idea. However, although this may occur sometimes in
nursing homes, Maria could gain more knowledge about nursing homes and ensure that she
considers sending her mother to one of the best nursing homes. This challenge may have been
identified perhaps when Maria attended a formal care planning meeting regarding her mother’s care
and the professionals who carried out this meeting may have noticed how Maria is reluctant about
sending her mother to a nursing home due to reasons such as her mother being treated poorly,
which may have demonstrated to the professionals how Maria does not know much correct
information about nursing homes. Therefore, they can advise Maria to research more about nursing
homes and visit the best ones to see if they are appropriate for her mother’s specific needs.
Practical challenges could be when an elderly may find it progressively difficult to cook meals or
clean themselves as they become less mobile. A service provider may find it cannot deliver the best
care possible because it does not have the resources to do so. Practical challenges could be down to
not being fully physically able to part take activities or it could be the case where they are timid to
get involved within the activities. As Nusrat suffers from learning difficulties, this type of challenge
