Health and Safety in an Engineering Workplace Unit 1 Assignment 2

Assignment 2

Introduction/Scenario
You have been asked by your company monitor work practices and procedures, and provide a risk
assessment of an engineering department within EEF’s Technology Centre, with a view to it being included
as a reference for the current companies risk assessments.

Task 1(P4)
Using the Controlled Waste Regulations 2012 as a reference, explain why it is so important that waste
produced by engineering practices, is disposed of in a safe and appropriate manner. Include who should
be involved in the safe disposal of waste.

The Controlled Waste Regulations 2012 states that household, industrial and commercial waste are
considered controlled waste and are in relation to the Environmental Protections Act 1990 however,
sewage is not controlled by this regulation.
It is important to dispose of waste produced by engineering practices properly so that you reduce the risk
of contaminating the environment creating hazards. Different types of wastes have the potential to cause
harm to people and the environment around them, spreading disease if not disposed of in the correct way.
It Is your companies responsibility to dispose of your waste and take the right steps to do it properly, as
you transfer waste to another waste holder you should be certain that you have choose the right way of
disposing the waste to make it have the appropriate journey of disposal. When choosing the appropriate
waste holder, you should make sure they are authorised and that the intended destination is also
authorised (meaning it’ll be disposed correctly).
For example if your company did not dispose of waste appropriately here’s what could happen: Company
disposes an oil barrel incorrectly, the oil then could go into the ground which will eventually find its way
into a water source, from the water source it will contaminate the fish that are this water, a fishing
company collects these fish not knowing they have been in oil contaminated water, sell the fish to the
public, causing human consumption of contaminated fish.

Task 2 (P5)
Describe several different methods used to identify the health and safety hazards that may be present in a
working environment with which you are familiar. Consider all areas of your workplace.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
In part 3 of this regulation it states that the company should provide a suitable and sufficient assessment of
risks exposed to them, visitors, emergency services, public and disabled which identifies the things they
may be exposed to at work. Throughout a risk assessment there are five main steps which are; identify
hazards, who’s at risk, estimate and evaluate (likelihood x severity = Evaluate), record and review.

PEME (People, Equipment, Materials, Environment).
This is another method used to identify hazards in a working environment. First of all, it states that you
should identify whom will be at risk. Then identify what equipment may be used and what hazards they
could cause to everyone for example if the person using it is trained to use this equipment. Furthermore,
assess the materials being used whether the workers will need certain PPE to ensure they will be working
safely. Finally, in this method you should look at the environment the work will be carried out whether it’s
outdoors/indoors or is the sufficient space to carry out the task.

, Observations.
Another way of identifying health and safety hazards that may be in the workplace would be by carrying
out regular observations. By carrying out regular observations throughout the workplace you will be able
to sufficiently decrease hazards around the company and also deal with them appropriately. Furthermore,
carrying out observations can help to encourage safe working behaviours to ensure everyone is working
well and safely.

Task 3 (P6, P7)
Carry out a risk assessment of a given area, using the appropriate form.
1. Identify and record a minimum of three different hazards.
2. Fully complete the risk assessment for each hazard identified, including all five steps within a risk
assessment. (P6)
3. For each hazard identified, suggest suitable control measures after you have completed your risk
assessment and state the reasons why they are suitable. (P7)

Throughout my working week I have carried out a risk assessment in the department I have been working
in which was MSE – Semi Auto Brake Pad Build Machine.

1. The first risk I identified in the cell was the compressed air that they were using. The compressed
air is used to clear any swarf that could affect the way the robot picks up an ISOPAD. This is a risk
to a few people including the actual operator and the trainer whom is training the operator to use
the compressed air. One step that Is already in place to reduce the hazard is by making sure every
operator is given the appropriate training before working alone on the compressed air. To keep the
hazard/risk maintained and controlled there should be breakers in the circuit so that the operator
can isolate the circuit of compressed air when needed. This is suitable because if there is a
shortage in a circuit then you can isolate the circuit in order to remain safe. Another control
measure I suggest would be to make sure that the compressed air device is maintained & serviced
