Microsoft Office or OpenOffice

The first all-in-one package for office work programs came with the release of Microsoft
Office. The first full set of Office software was released in 1990 , Microsoft Word was the
first word-processing program to feature automatic line breaks, bold and italic fonts. Since
it was the first fully released word-processing software for computers it has had a good
head start on the market, meaning that sales are still being driven towards it as being the
most trustful and reliable software.

OpenOffice is a community-driven word processing software developed by people that
decide to volunteer instead of having a team of people that are paid to develop it . For the
most part, OpenOffice is free for all people to use since it is an open-source product, also
meaning that a user or company can edit the software to however it wishes the layout to
be, the features can also be changed to suit the company’s needs. Many companies would
not wish to do this however, as it would take a lot of time and resources to fully customise
the software.

It is very possible that different edited versions will be uploaded to the OpenOffice website
that have been developed by people for certain purposes, for example one that gives the
user a template for creating an essay or another that helps you to create a resume.

Microsoft Office is available to US-based non-profit organisations for a reduced price for
around $20-30. While this is considerably cheaper than the full price, OpenOffice still
remains a completely free product for everyone to use. However, if the organisation stops
running the donations, you would have to pay the full price for all future updates to the
software.

Microsoft Office may also not work on some Operating Systems, while OpenOffice has been
known to be edited to support a wide list of known Operating Systems. There will usually be
many different versions of OpenOffice available to download , so it can be confusing for
some less tech savvy computer users, whereas they can easily jump in to globally
recognised Microsoft Office programs with ready-made tutorials at their disposal. Updating
Microsoft Office software to higher versions for free will mainly only ever contain bug fixes
and will rarely ever add any new features, to get new features you would likely have to pay
for the new product. With OpenOffice all you need to update to the newest version with
plenty of new features is a working internet connection, best of all these updates are all
free.

Since Microsoft Office is somewhat recognised globally, many new employees that you hire
will be able to start work straight off the bat because they would already know how to use
the program after probably having used it already in school , at a job or at home.
