Unit 1 – P6, P7, M3, D3, P8, M4, D4, P9

Fundamentals of Physics
Scientific reports are required when an individual wants to share their findings and results
with people who are looking to expand on their knowledge. These people are then able to compare
their primary data with the secondary data of someone else’s report.
The appropriate audience of scientific reports would be dependent on the content of the report. If
the scientific report contains a lot of in-depth knowledge, then the appropriate audience would be
people who are already trained in that area or are training to be, for example professionals or
students. This is because this audience already have a level of knowledge gained and so are able to
understand what the scientific report is trying to bring across. If the lab report contains more graphs
and tables showing research you’ve come up with and not a lot of in-depth terminology, then the
target audience would be people who aren’t as qualified in that area but are still looking for personal
or business purposes. There are many charities or agencies that aren’t as qualified to know all the
specifics but do have a basic amount of knowledge to understand what the scientific report is trying
to bring across.
Scientific reports can be found all over in the scientific industry. This is because people
publish their reports in different places to try and get their findings out to a further audience. Many
scientific reports are available online, especially in the scholarly articles section as many
professionals who specialise in many different areas in science publish their findings. They publish
them to not only add to the new findings of science but also to get people specialising in the same
area to learn from their research and maybe find out more than what has previously had been
found. Scientific reports could also be found by talking to other students. In university especially,
scientific reports are always available as students are constantly writing them for their studies and
their own research. So, if you are a student you could easily ask another student to use their
scientific report as secondary data.

, The terminology used in scientific reports is also dependent on the target audience. If you
are a student and are writing a scientific report to be given to a lecturer to be marked, then the
terminology will be very specific to that area as the lecturer has experience. However, if you are a
researcher writing a scientific report for the audience of a charity or agency then the terminology
would not be as in-depth and specific due to a lot of the words and explanations used might not
making sense to the reader.
Scientific reports are best used when an individual is trying to share their findings with an
audience. This is because scientific reports have a well-structured set out with headings for specific
information and so if the audience is trying to find the comparison of their findings with other
individuals then they know to look in the discussion section. As a whole, they are the best used for
this purpose as it makes the audience reading it, not only easily find the information they require,
but also the content make sense as it isn’t all over the place.

Scientific posters are required to bring across fast pieces of knowledge to anyone who can
read it. They are meant to visually appealing as well as getting across key pieces of information.
The appropriate audience for scientific posters depends on what the topic of the poster is on. If the
scientific poster is on healthy eating, then it can be directed at anyone from a young age to matured
adults. This is because healthy eating should be incorporated into everyone’s lifestyle and children
are taught about it at school. This means that not a lot of knowledge is needed on it to understand
how to have a healthy diet and so therefore can be understood by everyone. However, if the poster
is on quantum mechanics then not a lot of everyday people would have already gained a lot of
knowledge on it and so wouldn’t pay a lot of detail into reading it. These posters would therefore be
mainly directed at those with an interest.
Scientific posters can be found in areas and buildings where science is a component. This is
because in areas like schools and hospitals, science is a big thing and so they’d attract a wider
audience in these places rather than a religious building etc. Scientific posters are very common in
hospitals due to the amount of conditions that people may have or know people who have.
Hospitals also promote healthy lifestyles as the less people who come in for minor things, means the
more time and staff they have for major casualties and patients. And so, the posters about smoking,
healthy eating, maintaining hygiene etc. may help to make patients aware and therefore reduce the
amount that come in for the reason on the poster.
The terminology used in scientific posters are be kept to an understanding level. Complex
words and sentences are limited as the poster is trying to draw people into reading it, not bore
people before they’ve taken a proper look at it. For example, the affects of smoking posters would
include the diseases caused by smoking; liver cancer, lung cancer etc. and possibly some pictures.
The poster wouldn’t include an in-depth run through of how smoking damages each of the body
parts as not many people would understand half the words mentioned.
Scientific posters are best used when trying to bring across important pieces of information
or facts but in a quick and efficient manner. This is because, not only do posters contain images and
bold colours to draw the audience in, but the quick and short sentences draw the reader in even
more to read it. And so, the information being mentioned is being read by people passing by.

Scientific presentations are required in meetings or seminars. They are used to bring across a
more in-depth dive into that topic and are also used to present across ideas and research.
The appropriate audience for scientific presentations is people who either have an interest in that
subject or people who are already involved. This is because if the presentation is being shown in a
meeting, then it would most likely be shown to people already in the industry for that topic. And so,
because knowledge is already known in the meeting, then the presentation is required to show any
new and possible efficient ideas that can benefit. Also, with seminars, people go to them because
they want to listen to what the speaker has to say and what they have to show. So, the audience
would mainly be people with knowledge or people who want to gain knowledge.
