In this report I am going to be identifying and explaining the main threats and consequences of the
security of people, property and premises, as well as evaluating one of the threats by the use of the
Manchester Arena bombing.

The main threats to the security of people can include; assaults, theft, robbery, fraud and
threatening behaviour. An example of the consequences that an assault can have on a person are;
long term mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, suicidal thoughts and dissociation
(meaning they may struggle to focus on work or not feeling present in everyday situations.) It can
also make the individual feel insecure and not safe.

There are several threats when it comes down to national premises, such as Manchester arena or
the World trade centre. However, their biggest threat is that they are a huge target for terrorist
groups, due to the amount of people they contain and they are widely known. The definition of
terrorism is “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit
of political aims” (Oxford Dictionary.) Terrorism can have serval consequences. These include; an
impact on the countries economy (in which the attack took place), the injuries and deaths caused,
the psychological trauma of the victims and it may lead to enhanced security to prevent it from
happening in future. Terrorists target national premises for several reasons; they do it for media
attention, publicity and they want the Government to react.

Crimes against property is very common in the UK. This can include; theft, arson, commercial
sabotage, burglary, product tempering and fraud. If a burglary took place in someone’s home, it can
have quite a significant impact on them. They may be experiencing a lot of emotional stress, feeling
insecure or they may even experience a financial impact. As a result, it would have some
consequences regarding the home owner’s personal security.

Manchester Arena Bombing

On 22 May 2017 at 22:31, a suicide bomber, who went by the name of Salman Abedi, detonated
inside of Manchester arena during a concert which a total of 14,200 people attended. Over 800
individuals were injured and 22 people were killed (23 including the suicide bomber.) This was no
doubt a terrorist related attack and happened as people were leaving the arena. The terrorist
managed to enter the venue because there was no security on the doors at the end of the concert
therefore, anyone could walk in and out of the arena. An article from the ‘Independent’ news
website contains a statement that says’ it was possible for anyone to “walk in with things under a
coat” (Independent, 2017), and others saying their bags were not checked.’ The terrorist chose this
particular venue firstly because it was large, thousands of people attended and it was what seemed
to be an easy target, due to the lack of security. Teenagers were the main target of this attack along
with many other young people and adults included. It has a greater impact due to the fact their main
victims were teenagers and children because it will have more media coverage and will cause an
overall greater reaction towards the terrorists. This is one of there main aims, to gain them more
publicity and media coverage so they can be made aware of. There other aims are to get people to
join their group and they want a reaction from the government.

As a result of the attack, Manchester Arena has increased their security. Since 2017 they have added
compulsory bag searches and metal detectors upon your entry to the arena. A new rule has also
been enforced that you can only bring drawstring bags or pump bags (such as a JD’ bag), or it can be
a small bag, including handbags that fit the guidelines on their website at Manchester Arena.com
(40cm x 35cm x 19cm) Before the attack, people could wait in the lobby because you could get into
the building its self without a ticket (not including access to the concert. ) Whereas now, you need to
