budget is £9.6 billion in 2007/2008, it then went up to £10.8 billion in 2018/2019.
The home office is the lead government department and it is responsible for a variety of
departments. Such as immigration passports, drugs policy, security and order, crime,
counterterrorism and police, UK border agency is an MI5 & government policies and
security related issues. They are responsible for the British Army, the Royal Navy and the
Royal Airforce.
Within the immigration and passport department, the Home Office has a duty to issue
passports and visas, Secure the UK border and control immigration along with also

terrorist attacks or smuggling illegal people or substances across the border. Helping the
army and the police.
The Home Office is also responsible for the drugs policy as they are the ones that
decide the classification of drugs. It was under the Labour government that cannabis was
reclassified as a class B drug whereas before it was known as a class C drug. At the
moment in the Home Office, they are currently reviewing its policy on cannabis again. The
Policy on drugs is constantly renewed in light of new drugs coming onto the market, this is
very practical and keeps the community is safer. A cross-party political group recently visited
Canada to report back its findings on the legalization of cannabis. Security and order play a
part in immigration as they need to control and make sure that airports and border security
are in order and no one passes without proper papers. Also, as stated earlier, helps the
police and army. UK Borders Agency and MI5 also come into play here with the Home
Office. They keep track of and monitor all borders and make sure there are no threats from
any individuals or groups, also helping the public services.

drug use, it also shapes the alcohol strategy, policy, and licensing conditions. Along with
many others like keeping the United Kingdom safe from the threat of terrorism, reducing and
preventing crime. The Home Office is responsible for collecting data on crime this can be
anything from evidence at the crime scene to prison records. The police would come into
play here as they have to provide the documents and evidence to the Home Office.
The Home Office deals with counter-terrorism and the police. The Home Office also supports
viable, responsible and accountable policies and empower the public and three at the police
