Unit 5 Learning Aim A (Assignment 1 Task 1)
Examine principles, values and skills, which underpin meeting the care and
support needs of individuals

Introduction: This assignment will examine principles, values and skills, which
underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals.

Main body:
P1: Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity
for individuals with different needs.
What is equality?
Equality in the health and social care sector means everyone having equal access to
the services they need, that is, receiving a service of equivalent quality that suits
their personal needs, no matter where they live or how they live their lives.
What is diversity?
Diversity means a variety of differences. To value diversity is to respect other
people's cultures and beliefs and value them. Health professionals must respect and
value differences such as age, gender and disability.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PROMOTE EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY
FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS. LINK IT BACK TO 3
DIFFERENT CASE STUDIES.
Equality means protecting everyone and anyone from discrimination or unfair
judgement. It is preventing people being treated differently or unfairly by others on
any basis such as gender, age or beliefs.
Diversity means that all differences are respected. Individual rights and self-
identification is encouraged by not making any culture or any personal differences
superior. It covers over everyone differences in everyone and helps them to be
protected from any prejudice. By integrating diversity in health and social care,
everyone will be able to have the ability to access and learn new perspectives. It can
also build new ways of fulfilling the standards for health and social services for all.
Is important that healthcare professionals promote equality and diversity for
individuals with different needs because it ensures that individuals are respected and
have equal access to all opportunities, regardless of their differences. Is important
that health and social care practitioners ensure that equality and diversity are
considered in everything that professionals do. People from all backgrounds should
have equal access to care and be treated with respect. The elderly, individuals with
special needs and people with different background’s rights should be safeguarded
and protected by legislation. Everyone should have access to the support and care

that they need regardless of the individual circumstances. Employees within the
health and social care sector have a responsibility to promote equality and diversity
in all aspects of their employment, delivering an equal, personalised and diverse
service. A health and social care professional should ensure that service users are
treated fair and equally in their work, and they are treated with dignity and respect for
the service user they are responsible for.

following her surgery to her appendix that had busted before she arrived at the

result of her been obese which also contribute to her having low self-esteem and
been bullied by the local teenagers and that why she doesn’t want to leave the
community hospital. Additionally, she hasn’t never been assessed for any support to

diversity for Valerie who has had surgery, for the healthcare professional that is

Regarding the bullying, the healthcare professional can talk to Valerie and advise on

important that the healthcare professional makes Valerie see that he/she is there to
support and advise her on what is best for her. The importance of equality and
diversity with individuals with special needs and Valerie is very important especially
in Valerie’s situation, because she suffer from mental health and she is been bullying

healthcare provider should be careful what to say and how to approach Valerie. Also,
Valerie should have the opportunity to develop her potential. Valerie has hearing
impairment which she hasn’t been assessed and either getting any kind of support,
so the healthcare provider must assess her hearing impairment and evaluate what
kind of support she is entitled to receive. Another need that Valerie has is that she is
vegetarian which means that the healthcare provider has to consider that she
doesn’t eat meat so the healthcare provider should not include meat in her diet plan.
Due to her been obese the healthcare provider should consult a dietain to help
Valerie with her diet and make her see why she need to lose weight. The dietitian will
