Citizenship and diversity Introduction Kyle Thurston

My idea of citizenship is the place/roll we hold in a society or country. To

obey the federal, state and local laws. A person will hold a place of

citizenship to a country which grants them access to a passport of that

country. Having legal rights and responsibilities which are denied to

people who are not nationals, citizens are expected to contribute to a

community such as work and pay taxes.

Definitions of citizenship. Citizenship can be interpreted in many different

ways, because of this a lot of definitions can be given. Citizenship is the

status of a person recognized under the custom or law of a sovereign

state as a member of or belonging to the state. Each state is free to

determine the conditions under which it will recognize people as it’s

citizens, and the conditions under which that status will be withdrawn

(oxford dictionary). Citizenship is granted when meeting the legal

requitements of national, state or local government.

What legally makes somebody a citizen and how you can become a

citizen. There are two ways to become a citizen of a country (UK). Either

you are born in the UK or both parents are UK citizens of the time of your

birth even if you are born outside of the UK. If you were born inside of the

, UK but one of your parents is a citizen of another country you are able to

apply for a dual nationality. The other way to become a citizen is through

naturalisation. Naturalisation is the process in which a non UK citizen

takes to become a citizen, this is done by meeting legal requirements.

There are five basic requirements that need to be met, these are.

 Be over 18 years old

 Be of “good character” this means you have not committed any

major crimes or immigration fraud

 Be currently living in the UK

 Meet the English language requirement

 Pass the “life in the UK” test

There are also three general requirements

 Lived in the UK for 5+ years

 Travelled outside the UK for no more than 90 days in the last year

 UK permanent residence

If you meet these requirements you are able to apply, once you have

applied it may take up to six months for your application to be reviewed.

If you are accepted, you will be invited to attend a Citizenship Ceremony.

At the ceremony, you will make an Oath of Allegiance to the UK,

promising to respect its rights, freedoms and laws. Then, you will be

presented with your Certificate of British Citizenship. (immigration direct
