P3/P4:
In this task, I will be describing how my chosen businesses are organised and
how the style of organisation helps them to fulfil their purposes. This includes
aspect such as their aims and objectives; the organisational chart; span of
control etc.
Tesco
The purpose of Tesco is to create a sense of value for their customers in order
to acquire long term loyalty from them to ensure they are returning
customers. Their primary aim is to generate profit and this is achieved through
many objectives, the major two of which are selling as much stock as possible,
and to expand and grow their business.
Smart Objectives:
 Smart
 Measureable
 Achievable
 Realistic
 Time bound
I would classify these objectives as SMART objectives as all of the elements can
be applied, for example, the amount of profit generated can be measured by
monitoring the sales revenue; or the growth of the business can be monitored
by the amount of sales actually made.

The chart above conveys the geographical organisational structure of Tesco. It
is classed as such due to the allocation of job roles being dependant on the
products within the area. The structure helps to meet the aim and purpose and
by allocating roles based on area, staff are explicitly aware of what aspects of
the business they are responsible for. This allows for the individuals to
specialise in their allocated field, meaning they will be able to perform their
role successfully. The system maximises efficiency in order to generate the
most amount of profit which is the ultimate aim for the enterprise.
The span of control is fairly tight, this is because there are only two primary
managers with many sub-sections of a specific department, for example the
food section has separate roles for fresh food and ambient food. The managers
monitor the behaviour/performance of their staff in order to ensure that they
are carrying out their designated tasks and operating to a good enough
standard. This contributes to meeting the aim and purpose as this maximises
the smooth operating of the business in order to generate the highest amount
of profit possible.
One of the functional areas is marketing which consists of promoting and
advertising the business through means such as TV adverts, Online adverts etc.
This helps to achieve its aim and purpose of increasing in sales and generating
profit as it contributes towards attracting more customers and growing the
business. This ultimately results in more purchases and long term loyal
customers. Finance and accounting is another functional area of the enterprise
and this is also crucial to achieving the aim and purpose and it conveys how
much profit is made as well as what funds are allocated where in order to keep
the business operating effectively as well as pay debts. Without this, it is likely
for multiple financial issues and conflicts to arise such as incorrect/delayed
payments. Customer service is another vital functional area. This revolves
around the satisfaction of the customers and the services they are provided
with. This could involve a customer service representative supporting /guiding
a confused or troubled customer or just providing good affordable products to
them. Based on the customer’s experience, this determines whether they will
be returning and the types of reviews they may give which further contributes
to more sales being made and the growth of the business, helping to achieve
their aim and purpose.
