Concepts of Equality
Equality

The dictionary definition of equality is “as a state of being equal” (Oxford
Dictionary, N/D). However, this definition does not make any sense or explain
what is meant by equality. Equality is very difficult to define as everybody has
different perceptions of what it means, most people believe that it simply means
the ‘same’, whereas in actual fact this is not the case. An example of this is, if you
had five children in front of you who all have autism, would you treat them all the
same? Or would you treat them all how they needed to be treated, so equally? This
proves that equality does not mean the same.

The World Heath Oranisation (WHO) definition of equality is better to use as it
gives more of an insight as to what this complex word actually means. They
explain that it is used by different political groups to promote their own values or
interest. The word comes with a lot of discussion, it is an extremely intricate and
sensitive matter (WHO, N/D). Many countries have laws and legislations in place
to ensure that equality is present and no individual is discriminated against.

Stretch also has her own definition of equality, she explains that all individuals
should be treated equally and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. In
accordance with the law, organisations have equality policies to ensure that
everyone is treated equally (Stretch, 2010). This definition is adapted to health and
social care and is therefore more useful to understand as new staff joining our care
home.
