Purpose of this assignment
This unit aims to give learners knowledge of the components and systems commonly used
in lubrication systems, transmissions and plant equipment.
Scenario
You work for a voluntary organisation which has taken on the challenge of establishing an
Engineering training school in a developing country.
The purpose of this school is to train people how to use machinery which will help them to
make water pumps, engines.
You need to explain how to lubricate the machines used in the school, how they are
lubricated and why they use different types of lubricants.
Task 1
Briefly explain the purposes and actions of three different types of lubricant, state their
advantages and limitations together with examples of an application for each type.
(This provides evidence for P1)
Task 2
Explain, with the aid of diagrams/sketches/images, the operating principle of the following
lubrication systems:-
(a) Splash lubrication system.
(b) Auto-lube oil/grease system.
(c) Re-circulating oil system.
Explain how each system is maintained.
(This provides evidence for P2)
Task 3
Modern automotive engines use synthetic lubricants and pressurised re-circulating oil
systems. Justify the use of this type of lubricant and the lubrication system in this
application.
(This provides evidence for D1)
