Chosen artwork: Jheronimus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights, 1490-1510.

Jheronimus Bosch is a famous Dutch painter born around the 1450s in den Bosch.
He was an artist in the Renaissance time. (Pickeral, T. ,2023, 13 December, The

The garden of earthly delights consists of three sections. The first one on the left is
the garden of Eden here we can see Adam and eve in paradise when earth was just
created. The middle section of the painting is supposed to represent earth and all the
desires and lusts that come with our world. The third and last section of the painting
on the right is Bosch his interpretation of hell. In the panel in the middle this ‘fake
paradise” is shown. We can see multiple people engaging in sexual acts, fruits that
are way bigger then they are in reality and overall thing that are considered sins(in
Christianity) are being depicted in the middle panel. The right panel, in which hell is
depicted, is the darkest and most disturbing part of this art piece. You can see people
being punished for the sins they committed in the panel before this. People are being
hanged inside of musical instruments, eaten and pooped out by a bird-like creature,
frozen to death and eaten by the various animals and creatures. With this painting
Bosch is trying to warn the viewer to not fall victim to these sins and to stay on the
right path. It can also be seen as a dig to the church and their hypocrisy since we can
see in the right panel(hell) a pig dressed as a nun hugging a naked man. (The

his painting style was different to most in the time of the renaissance his paintings
looked more like the style that was popular in medieval times. Bosch depicted a lot of
religious themes and stories in his work, but it was different then most other painters
of the time. He created a bunch of figures and creatures that look almost modern and
fantasy like. This painting fits quite well in its time since we can see that it focuses
heavily on the telling of a religious story, but we can also see that with the
renaissance and reformation in northern Europe that people were starting to question
and criticise the catholic church. That is why the nun in pigs clothing in this painting is
so important it shows that people high up in the catholic church who are being
hypocritical or not good Christians(‘act like pigs’) will still end up in hell. I personally
love most of Bosch his work, because there is so much detail in them. They also feel
almost otherworldly, because of the creatures he paints.
