CHD
coronary heart disease
What is the cause?
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is generally caused by a buildup of fatty
deposits (atheroma) on2the artery walls around the heart (coronary
arteries). The buildup of atheroma narrows the arteries, limiting the
supply of blood to the heart muscle. This is known as atherosclerosis Figure 1: Illustration of artery build up

The main symptoms of CHD:
• chest pain
• shortness of breath
• pain throughout the body
• feeling faint
• nausea
However, not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and some people may not experience any
at all before being diagnosed with coronary heart disease (NHS Choices,2019).
