Unit 14- breast cancer and stroke how it was diagnosed with the physiological disorder,
have been referred to professionals for further investigation/treatment and have received
or be in receipt of treatment or care for the disorder.

Case study on cancer (in your own words in some depth explain).
Name- Mrs Shane
Age-42
Gender- female

What do you know about the illness?

Ductal breast cancer (stage 3), triple negative. I only had knowledge of breast cancer, not
the various types

Is it genetic or in your family history?

As far as I am aware, there is no genetic or family history of the illness.

What were your concerns/symptoms before visiting the GP?

I found a lump on my breast by chance, roughly pea size, I had no other symptoms.

What was your experience with the diagnosis/ how you were diagnosed?

I was referred to the breast clinic at the local hospital. At my initial appointment, I had a
mammogram and then a scan which showed the lump. An attempt was made to drain fluid
but there was none therefore they took a biopsy. At this point I was told that it was not a
cyst and that it could possibly be cancer.

Who was involved in the diagnosis?

When I received the results, it was the Consultant Breast Surgeon and Nurse that were
present, who I had also seen at my initial appointment. They explained the diagnosis in
detail and the best course of treatment that would be undertaken.

Were you refired to any specialists within the hospital?

No as I was already under the Breast Surgeon.

What tests did you have to confirm your diagnosis?

A biopsy was taken of the lump.

What questions did the doctor ask you?
