, This assignment task will assess how best practice could be evaluated in promoting positive
behaviour. I will evaluate why restrictive interventions are used in only the most serious situations.
Finally, I will evaluate the impact of strategies used to promote positive behaviour on an individual’s
wellbeing.

M1- Assess how best practice could be evaluated in promoting positive behaviour

Best practice involves practitoners doing their job well, to the best that they can. It involves making
improvements to their work practices to have the best outcomes for individuals. “Best practice
approaches can be effective both in terms of reducing the occurrence and impact of unwanted
behaviours and supporting individuals to develop skills that can improve their quality of life.”
(Ferreiro Peteiro et al., 2016) Best practice includes professional procedures that are accepted or
prescribed as being correct or most effective. It can reduce the occurrence and impact of unwanted
behaviours and can support individuals to develop skills that can improve their quality of life. Best
practice includes good communication, good rapport, building a relationship with service users,
environmental factors, knowing potential triggers of behaviours, and finally understanding how
someone might behave if they are living with different conditions such as dementia. Best practice is
professional procedures that are accepted or prescribed as being correct or most effective. Best
practice can reduce the occurrence and impact of unwanted behaviours. It also supports individuals
to develop skills that can improve their quality of life. (Tanner.S, Class notes, 2022)

Best practice can be evaluated by using formal observations. Formal observations are carried out by
a member of staff that is a higher pay grade than you, or a regulatory body, such as the care quality
commission or Ofsted. A formal observation would be one where the observer made arrangements
prior to the observing. A date, time, place, event, or activity to be observed is discussed and planned
out. An informal observation is when the observer just drops in and observes whatever may be
occurring at that time. (Tanner.S, Class notes, 2022)

The purpose of best practice is to reduce the occurrence and impact of unwanted behaviours. It
ensures that practitoners can build a good relationship with the individuals that they are caring for.
Best practice enables people to access flexible support and services, and this can promote positive
behaviour as individuals feel heard and understood. Best practice can support individuals to develop
skills that can improve their quality of life, and that can help them manage their own behaviour. This
can help promote positive behaviour because if people can recognise their behaviour is moving to a
different stage of behaviour, then they can begin to self-manage their behaviour before there is an
escalation. Best practice can also involve practitoners having good communication skills. This is a
way to promote positive behaviour as practitoners can be approachable and make individuals feel
that they are able to talk to them and open up. By doing this practitoners can help individuals find
solutions to their problems instead of using challenging behaviour as a way to express that they have
a problem. Good communication involves practitoners being approachable, supportive, and helpful
for an individual. Practitioners should have an open posture, make eye contact, and use a gentle
tone of voice, to ensure that the individual feels comfortable opening up to them. (Tanner.S, Class
notes, 2022) Best practice can be used to understand the impact the environment that the individual
is in could have on their behaviour. It can help to identify any triggers in the environment, and how
they can minimise those triggers for individuals. Best practice involves a person-centred, values-
based approach. It helps practitoners to recognise the individuals’ unique needs, preferences,
experiences, wishes and strengths. Best practice can improve an individual’s quality of life, which if
their quality of life is better their behaviour is more likely to be positive. Best practice involves
creating services and support that meet individual’ needs. It involves developing services and
