P5 – Explain how employee performance is measured and managed
In this task, I will define the terms: performance measurement and performance management. I
will explain how Matthew Boulton College measures and manages the performance of
employees.
Performance measurement is a quantifiable indicator used to assess how well an organisation is
achieving its desired aims and objectives. In other words, it is the process of collecting, analysing
and reporting information regarding the performance of an individual, group system or
organisation in general. This process can enable the college to obtain a sense of direction
concerning how it is operating and whether improvement is required.
Performance management includes activities which ensure that goals are consistently being met
in an effective and efficient manner. Matthew Boulton College can assess the performance of its
staffs by verifying whether they are achieving set tasks in time and working to their best ability.
This can also be checked by ensuring that the teacher’s students are on track with their course
and being given appropriate guidance and support.
Another vital factor is to check if certain employees have a high rate of absence. If this is the
case, the college will have to ask the college to take appropriate actions as this can adversely
affect the performance of other employees as well. Therefore the Principal should have a
discussion with the staff to ask for valid reasons as to why they have not been attending or been
going home early and thus settle a decision. In extreme cases, the HR department might have to
replace certain employees and go through the whole recruitment and selection process to bring
in new individuals into the college which can introduce new skills, experience, ideas and
motivate others.
Another efficient way of measuring performance in the college is by requesting a well-
experienced staff to attend another teacher’s lesson and thus observe and make comments on
that employee’s way of working. The observer could then report back to the senior staffs and
review their findings in order to try and identify areas for improvement and suggest possible
solutions. This process could positively influence productivity at work; given that employees will
be aware that the college is indeed concerned and interested in knowing whether the work force
is efficient, they will try to prove them right by performing to their best ability and this can have
a good impact on the success rates of the college.
Furthermore, by having a checklist on how to assess employees will enable the college to figure
out the strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement among its workforce. As a result, the
department concerned could then focus on these results and address these issues during future
teacher’s training, to ensure that employees are informed about how they can improve their
working abilities and perform better, which will be beneficial, both for themselves, students and
the college in general.
