Having worked for the same manufacturing company for
three years as an engineering apprentice, your supervisor
has asked you to help with the induction training for a
group of new young apprentices that will join the company
straight from school in a few weeks.

It has been noticed in previous years that recruits with no
industrial or other commercial experience have little or no
knowledge about the different functions encompassed by
‘operations’ within a manufacturing company.
Vocational Scenario or
Context
Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a briefing
document/report for the new recruits to fill in the gaps in
their knowledge. The new recruits will be asked to read the
report if it is of a good standard.

This written report needs to be easily understandable by
people with little previous engineering experience. It must
also set a good example through the proper use of technical
language and a high standard of English including accurate
punctuation and spelling.

The written report should provide detailed information on:

● The importance of each of the operations functions
in a manufacturing operation (such as manufacturing
Task 1
processes, maintenance, logistics, human resources
etc)
● How a range of factors (such as health and safety,
lead times, quality, dependability etc) relate to and

, influence the achievement of performance objectives
for a manufacturing operation at a function level
● Which factor is likely to have the greatest impact on
the overall performance of a manufacturing
organisation
● The importance/impact of relevant social, economic
or technological trends (such as additive
manufacturing, energy security, sustainability etc)
for a manufacturing operation, considering whether
their impact on performance will be significant in the
future and how a manufacturing operation might
change as a result.

Checklist of evidence A written report containing the information stated above
required
Criteria covered by this task:
Unit/Criteria
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
reference
Explain the functions of and factors affecting the performance of
39/A.P1
manufacturing operations and how these might change in the future.
Analyse the functions of and factors affecting the performance of
39/A.M1
manufacturing operations and how these might change in the future.
Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high
39/A.D1 standard, the functions of and factors affecting the performance of
manufacturing operations and how these might change in the future.

, Introduction To manufacturing Operations

Q1: The importance of each of the operations functions in a manufacturing operation (such as
manufacturing processes, maintenance, logistics, human resources, health and safety)

The operation functions of a manufacturing engineering company/organization is highly
crucial to ensure upmost success within the organization and to ensure that all stages of
manufacture work in correlation to one an other.

Health and Safety
Health and Safety is a key aspect of a business and is one of the most important functions
when we are carrying out manufacturing processes in the workshop. The key parts of health
and safety in a manufacturing company and in a manufacturing process:
COSHH:

• The COSHH is a Regulation which was introduced by the government in 2002. COSHH
mainly focuses on the safely handling of hazardous substances during different
processing stages such as the matrix and COSHH also there to protect employees as
hazardous material can affect your health and due to this the COSHH regulation
requires good ventilation in the premises, and it also requires employees to abide by
the rules set out by the employer and employees must also wear the PPE provided by
the employer.
• COSHH also requires employers to carry out frequent monitoring and analysis of the
processes which involves hazardous material and have devices in place to measure
the toxicity levels in the air and if its required send employees to compulsory health
check-ups. Employees must attend and follow closely the training provided and they
must abide by the rules as taught in training.
PPE Regulation at work 1992 Amended in 2022:

• This Regulation requires the employers to provide suitable PPE to all employees where
is required this consist of goggles, smock, and safety boots but it differs for different
jobs and engineering sectors.
• The employer must also Provide a safe place to store the PPE while its not being used
to prevent it being damaged. Employers must also provide suitable training where it
is demonstrated how the PPE is used and when it must be used and under what
circumstances. Employees must follow the rules set out by the employer and they
must attend training when requested by the employer.
• Employees must wear the PPE at all times and if they suspect their PPE is faulty, they
must request a replacement and should wait until a new and good condition PPE has
been provided.
