P2- how does different health promotions benefit the nation and individuals?
Case study:
Elena is 34 years old and is a mother she has recently quit her job and is struggling to find a new one,
she has 1 son named Sam who is 10 years old and weighs 102 pounds which is over weight for a 10
year old, this makes Elena worried that her son will have a lot of medical problems growing up. Elena
also doesn’t know hoe to cook so she ends up getting takeaway meals at least 3 times a week and if
she doesn’t then she would usually heat up ready cooked meals, this is the reason for Sam’s weight
gain as he also snacks a lot and is not very active.
Local campaign- Change for Life.
Campaigns like “Change for Life” benefit individuals as it shoes how to prevent being obese before
your child even is obese, this is effective as parents or carers already understand the risks of being
obese or overweight. This also involves informing individuals about health risks associated with
obesity and shows the benefits of being healthy, this promotes a positive attitude among the public
after fearing the dangers and seeing the positive side of being healthy.
Change for life increases a persons understanding about health risks, as they promote on the website
how important it is to check your child’s weight, as it explains the risk of obesity and anorexia the
website informs you tot get local support to like “talking to your school nurse or going to your local
GP” this helps create an awareness of the dangers of being overweight and not watching what
people are eating which helps decrease the risks of disease due to people being feared that them
that their chid is at risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes due to being obese.
Change for life helps individuals take responsibility in trying to improve an individual’s lifestyle
choices I’m going to demonstrate the examples by using what advice the website “Change for Life”
gives me using my case study. I believe that Elena should help her son Sam by making him play the
“10 minute shake up activities” as this will help Sam be active, Elena should do this with Sam to grow
a bond together and to make sure he feels comfortable with his body and so he doesn’t feel as if he’s
only doing it for his weight which will make him emotionally isolated. Elena should also start to
change the way she cook meals instead of ordering take away meals which is fatty foods which will
make Sam gain a lot of weight and can lead to further problems with heart diseases and strokes, she
should decrease on buying ready cooked meals and start ordering a take away only once a week, The
website can help out Elena as it shows alternatives for different foods so it makes sure to feed Sam
the right foods to help him lose his weight to live a healthier life style, the website also shows
different recipes to help out Elena for example “Meat balls and sauce, Vegetable stew or cheese and
tomato pasta etc”. The website is very helpful as it tells you all the recipes step by step which makes
it easier to follow to help Elena The website also suggests that Elena should go and see a dietitian for
her son at the local GP to help give advice and also makes sure that Elena sees the progress in herself
and her son.
