Property I (LL105) - Introduction to Property (Locke)

Essay Plans:
Q.1 Locke’s conception of property is only an argument for limited government. Discuss.
Q.2 Critically assess Locke’s justification of private property.
Q.3 Does Locke’s conception of property have any relevance today?
Q.4 Is Locke’s theory of property compatible with native title?

Note to reader on the structure of each essay plan:
● Above the title of each question, I have copy-pasted the relevant past-paper questions that were merged to derive the question
itself. The benefit of this approach is that the student can learn four essay plans that allow them, with minimal editing, to
answer every single question on any particular topic that has ever come up.
● Each essay question is divided into ‘for’ and ‘against’ sections. Note that some of the ‘against’ arguments may be used to
directly evaluate an idea (under the ‘for’ section), as opposed to going under the ‘against’ section.
● The questions you will eventually encounter in the exam will require you to use more than one essay plan to answer them. For
instance, all questions involving Locke’s conception of property will invariably require you to actually outline it in your
introduction, using the material from Q2.
● There’s plenty of scope for additional reading even for arguments that have been thoroughly covered in these notes, so don’t
fall into the trap of thinking that these notes are 100% complete or perfect!
