Book 22
 Odysseus threw off his rags and threw his arrows on the floor
 He then tells the suitors that they will die
 He asks Apollo for his shot to be true and shoots Antinous in the neck as he went to
take a drink from his golden two handled beaker
 Antinous had no idea that this would happen because he underestimated the beggar
 His life blood gushed from his nose in a jet
 When the suitors saw this, they began to shout and search for weapons
 They turned to Odysseus in fury
 They say that he will die now in revenge, promising that for killing Antinous vultures
will eat him
 It did not occur to them that they would be the ones to die
 Odysseus gave them a black look and listed out what they had done:
o Raped his maids
o Fleeced his house
o Courted Penelope
 The colour drained from them as they realised their fate and they searched for
sanctuary
 Eurymachus then blame all the deeds on Antinous in an attempt to escape death
 Odysseus then says to Eurymachus that he can either run and hide or fight him and
he promises that no suitor will escape alive
 Eurymachus then says to the suitors that they will stand and fight as one and then
raise the alarm through the town
 He then drew his double-edged bronze sword and leapt at Odysseus
 At the same time, Odysseus shot him in the neck with an arrow
 Amphinomus attacked next but Telemachus killed him with a spear to the breast
 Telemachus then says that he will go and get protection weapons
o 4 shields
o 8 spears
o 4 bronze helmets
 He and their allies then armed themselves
 While Odysseys still had arrows, he shot as many suitors as possible until their
bodies lay in piles
 When he ran out of arrows, he put on his armour and grabbed two stout spears
 Agelaus then asked Melanthius if they could escape and raise the alarm but
Melanthius said no as the passage out is too narrow
 Melanthius then went to get protection weapons for the suitors
 Odysseus is shocked to find the suitors have weapons and blames the maids or
Melanthius
 Telemachus says that it is his fault for leaving the storeroom door open
 Odysseus orders Eumaeus and the cowherd to tie Melanthius up and chuck him in
the storeroom until later
 Athene, disguised as Mentor, appears
 Odysseus cheers and beckons her over, knowing her to be Athene but the suitors
jeer and try to win her over to her side, promising to kill her if she does not
 Athene then turned into a swallow and sat in the rafters of the hall
