Geography Consolidation 1.7
UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEX TRENDS AND PATTERNS FOR TECTONIC DISASTERS HELPS EXPLAIN
DIFFERENTIAL IMPACTS

(a) Tectonic disaster trends since 1960 in the contest of overall disaster trends.Research
into accuracy and reliability of the data to interpret complex trends

- Total number of hazards has increased
- However there are two key categories:
- Hydro-met Hazards have increase - possibly as a result of global warming
- Tectonic Hazards have not increased or decreased
- However Tectonic Hazards have remained the same but tectonic disasters have increased
- Deaths have reduced over time as a result of better management
- The number of reported disasters have increased as a result of wider coverage
- The number of people affected has risen as a result of population growth
- The economic loss as a result has largely increased
- However Reporting disaster impacts can be very difficult because:
- Location- if isolated data may be ignored from these areas
- Deaths quoted by governments can be bias to show they are doing a good job

(b) Tectonic mega-disasters can have a regional of even global significance in terms of
economic and human impacts

- Mega disasters: Huge disasters killing many people
- These mega disaster account for large numbers of deaths as a result of natural hazards
- Mega disasters cause widespread damage and cause several natural hazards
- There are Three recent mega-disasters:
- 2004 Asian Tsunami :
- 14 countries surrounding the Indian Ocean were affected
- Very large area effected by area- reaching Sri Lanka and Somalia
- 2011 Japanese Tsunami: Tohoku
- Just Japan directly affected by economically had global consequences
- This disrupted port, factories and power supplies
- Furthermore the Fukushima meltdown was the catalyst for Germany abandoning nuclear
programme
- 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption :
- Over 20 European countries affected by closure or diversion of airspace
- Over 100,000 flights were cancelled
- £1 billion in losses

(c) The concept of a multiple-hazard zone and how linked hydro-meteorological hazards
sometimes contribute to a tectonic disaster

- Multi-hazard zones are places where tow or more natural hazards can occur
- This produces a complexed disaster
- Examples: California, Indonesia and Japan
- The locations are usually:
- Tectonically active
- Major storm tracks
- Suffer global climate issues such as El Nino/La Nina
- Example: Philippines Mount Pinatubo
- Struck by Typhoon Yunga, the heavy rainfall caused volcanic ash to turn into a lahar
- Therefore a hydrological hazard contributed to a tectonic hazard
- Death toll: 850

, CASE STUDIES:
- Asian Tsunami 2004
- Japanese Tsunami 2011
- 2010 Eyjafjallajokull Eruption
- Philippines Mount Pinatubo
