Tina’s second cousin was diagnosed with asthma at age 5. What would be included in
Subjective Data Collection your treatment plan? What factors might concern you related to compliance?
Objective Data Collection
Education & Empathy Student Response:
(How old is the patient currently? Question is not really clear about this, just that the second cousin was
Documentation diagnosed AT AGE 5?)
If Tina's second cousin is now an adult or even still a child at this time, my response would be that asthma
Student Pre-Survey tends to run in families. If the cousin is an adult, I would instruct Tina to inform her cousin to regularily see a
medical professional for treatment and continued evaluation of the asthma, if the cousin does not already, and
Lifespan that it is important to keep a rescue inhaler with them at all times in case of an asthmatic episode and know
how to use it. Asthma can be related to lower socioeconomical status as well as exposures to certain irritants
Review Questions as a child. Factors that might concern me that are related to compliance are her cousins knowledge and
education regarding asthma along with any access to reliable transportation and whether or not the cousin has
Self-Reflection any medical insurance coverage that helps to cover costs of office visits and medications needed to manage
the asthma. As a child I would re-itterate all of the above information to the cousins parents along with making
sure to stress the importance of the child knowing the signs and symptoms of a worsening asthma attach and
how to properly use a rescue inhaler.
Model Note: Younger patients with asthma are treated with the same medication as adults. Some
medication dosages are based on weight. She should use an inhaler with a spacer attached for proper
medication administration and her caregiver should always assist her. Studies have shown that nebulizer
treatments are a less efficient way to administer medication. The provider should acknowledge that she may
have an asthma attack while in school, and therefore needs a note to allow her to use it as needed. The
patient and her caregiver should be educated about the importance of having her inhaler close-by and how to
use it.
Consider that Tina’s uncle is now 68 years old and has smoked heavily every day since
he was fifteen. What would you expect to find in his respiratory assessment? How would
this affect your oxygenation goals for this patient?
