,Preamble
Use of Underground Space is a course that provides knowledge about why and how to use the
underground space. This paper is written in order to demonstrate the acquired knowledge and how
to use it in practice. The goal of this paper is to compare the use of underground space in different
countries by exploring the cause of these differences. In particular, the role of climate will be
discussed.
We were excited about the opportunity to focus our research on different countries – it’s not very
often that we research other countries than the Netherlands at the TU Delft. At this university , it is
much more common to restrict course material to Dutch cases rather than foreign projects, which is
understandable, but to look at foreign projects yields a more thorough understanding of civil- and
geotechnical engineering across the world.
We request you to read this paper with an open mind, being able to look at foreign projects from a
local perspective rather than the Dutch one. By taking into account local circumstances and accepting
a new paradigm, the choices that are made will often be easier to understand; one of the key ideas
behind this paper.
In forming a group to write this paper, we paid particular attention to diversity. Since all students
participating in this course are Civil Engineering students, we chose to achieve group diversity by
forming a group of students that have studied different minor components of their bachelor’s
degree.
With this diverse group, we have managed to discuss the use of underground space from different
perspectives, thereby posing a thorough evaluation of the of the local circumstances and several case
studies. We sincerely hope you will enjoy reading this paper.
