Week 1- Introduction
College 8-2-2021
Software based products are products where software is used.
Product canvas: 7 product dimensions
1. Users (People, systems devices)
- Description
- Needs
- Outcome
1. Interface
- Context diagram
1. Action
- Describes capabilities -> user story map
1. Data
2. Control
- Identify policies, regulations
1. Environment
- Which constraints exist for the products development
1. Quality
The 7 product dimensions give you a holistic, comprehensive understanding of a product. No single
dimension by itself, is sufficient. The dimensions need to be consistent.
The power of software and your role as a designer (why is understanding the software useful):
- Software is malleable material just like clay and it allows you to mold it in expressive
shapes and forms. It also allows you to mold expressive behaviors that span time and
space.
Different product behaviors
- Sensing
- Recognizing
- Memorizing
- Acting
- Optimizing
1
, - Predicting
- Anticipating
Software based products are driven/realized through software, the software ‘brings the product to
life’.
Book ‘Designing connected products’ by Claire Rowland Chapter 1
User experience (UX) design and human–computer interaction (HCI) emerged in a world of desktop
computers. But now we use all kinds of interfaces: tablets, phones etc. and we use one platform
across al our devices. The internet of things (IoT) refers to everyday products that require
connectivity, sensing abilities and increased computing power. Designing for IoT brings all the
challenges of cross-platform design and more.
How is UX for IoT different?
- New challenges depending on the maturity of the technology your working with, the
context of use/expectations and the complexity of the system. You have to distribute UX
across multiple devices and give the user the idea that they are using a coherent service.
- The behaviour of the device is generated by a program that lives on another device on
the network Internet/cloud service.
- You don’t want glitches in the real world (you expect it from your phone, but not from
you doorbell)
- IoT is largely asynchronous
- Code can run in more than one places, so errors can occur
- Social & physical contexts, connected devices that can be used are more complex and
varied
- As more devices and things are added to the system, it will become harder for users to
comprehend
- Smart products from different manufacturers often don’t work with eachother
- ‘Information is now a design tool’
The most visible and tangible forms of IoT are:
- The UI/physical design
- The industrial design of the hardware
But these two are not the only aspects shaping the UX.
UI Lay out and aesthetics
Interaction design behavior and actions
Interusability:
- Specifying which functionality belongs on each device
- Creating design guidelines that span multiple device types
- Designing cross-device user flows for key interactions
2
, - Designing multiple device UIs in parallel
Conceptual model The understanding and expectations of users

, Week 2- The web and the internet
Videos week 2
The internet = a global network
The web = an internet application
Client = requesting information over the network
Server = serving information over the network
What is the internet?
Network protocol = set of rules and conventions enabling computer to communicate through a
network.
