AN IMMIGRANT LEARNER`S EXPERIENCES OF THE PHENOMENON OF XENEPHOBIA
IN AN INNER CITY SCHOOL IN JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA.

1. PURPOSE STATEMENT, RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND JUSTIFICATION
FOR THE RESEARCH
1.1 Purpose statement
The purpose of this study is to explore the xenophobic experiences of an immigrant learner on
the phenomenon of xenophobia in an inner city school in Johannesburg.
1.2 Research question
How an immigrant learner in an inner city school in Johannesburg experience the phenomenon
of xenophobia?
1.3 research sub-questions
 What are the causes and effects of xenophobia?
 What can be done at inner city schools in Johannesburg to instil a culture of tolerance
through addressing xenophobia?
1.4 Justification of the research
Africa suffers from a broader plague of intolerance, misplaced nationalism and xenophobia
which must be addressed to move the continent forward. (IOL 2019:10) In light of this, it is
imperative that this phenomenon of xenophobia at schools be investigated and amicable
solutions to be found. Some people have xenophobic tendencies deeply rooted in their minds
that they pass this onto their own children and the community in which they live in as a plaque.
This research intends to shed light on how children at school can avert xenophobia
