Equality is ensuring each individual has equal opportunities to make the most out of their lives.
An example of equality is when both men and women are viewed as being just as smart and
capable as each other. This is an important part of health and social care practice as it ensures
that all individuals have equal rights to the same treatment and are not treated unfairly. In case
study 1, Valerie has never been assessed for support to improve her hearing. This shows a lack
of equal treatment towards Valerie as she has not been given the equal opportunities as others
to improve her hearing. The Equality Act (2010) supports this as it protects individuals from
unjust and unfair treatment in the workplace and within wider society. Also, within case study 4
Billy is homeless due to arguments with his mother, this means Billy may not have been treated
equally by his mother. Professionals can promote equality in many different ways, for example,
they must treat all patients with equal respect and dignity.
Diversity means understanding that each individual has their differences. Diversity may be
within a society where there is a wide range of race, sex, age etc. Each professional must
promote diversity within health and social care and understand the importance of diversity
which is important in preventing discrimination and promoting equality within health and social
care. this allows for a range of people from all different backgrounds to use or work within
health and social care services. Diversity is important for Valerie and Billy as it means they will
be accepted for their differences in society and their needs would be met mentally. This allows
them to feel empowered and more open to accessing health and social care services.
Professionals can promote diversity by accommodating to each service user's needs. For
example, Valerie is vegetarian and would therefore need a vegetarian option on the menu. By
providing this it allows for each individual's needs to be met and preferences accepted. By
providing these services it allows for individuals like Valerie and Billy to feel more accepted into
society which may be important to their mental health as Valerie has suffered from bullying and
Billy has suffered from abuse from his mother's partner which could result in low self-esteem
and promoting diversity could help to improve this.
Discrimination is when someone is treated unfairly based on their differences. This may be their
race, gender, sexual orientation, disability etc. An example of discrimination would be not hiring
a woman because they are a woman. There are four different types of discrimination including
direct discrimination which means when someone is discriminated against because of their
physical or personal attributes that are protected by law. One example of discrimination is
indirect discrimination which is when a policy or procedure puts a certain group a disadvantage.
Another is direct discrimination which is when someone is treated unfairly against because they
belong to a certain group of people or have certain characteristics. Unfair discrimination is Any
employer’s policy or practice showing favour, prejudice or bias against employees. Fair
discrimination is discrimination based on affirmative action, on inherent, requirement of a
particular job. For example, if an individual cannot do a job due to their disabilities, then it is
fair discrimination to not hire them as they are unable to do the job.
