The Importance of Home Language Use
Home language use has been a controversial topic. There are a lot of people who believe that
home language use is of no importance and has no effect when learning a second language. In all reality,
home language use has a profound influence on the development of language and literacy skills. Home
language use impacts the children’s overall academic success. Children who are learning to read in a
second language are actually able to transfer many of their literacy skills from their first language to the
second one. A child’s home language is the one that they have used since they were born and it is the
language they have always used to communicate and gain language skills. If a child comes into the
classroom who does not yet know any English and has only spoken Spanish their entire life as we tell
them “You are not allowed to speak any Spanish in this classroom, only English!”, that would be
detrimental for the child’s development. Not only would the child probably feel extremely terrified,
upset, and nervous, the family would feel disrespected and unwelcomed. The child may already be very
nervous about adjusting to a new environment filled with strangers and a new structure of learning. The
child and their family may have even just moved here from a different country and many know litle to
no english. If we add on another abrupt change like banning home language use, it will have a negative
impact on the child’s progress. Home language use can help educators make the child feel more
comfortable and create a bridge between their learning at school with the knowledge they gained at
home, rather than destroying that bridge. On page 2 of NAEYC’s position statement on “Responding to
Linguistic and Cultural Diversity,” NAEYC (1995) states that “The loss of children’s home language
may result in disruption of family communication paterns, which may lead to the loss of
