The question I chose to answer for the final exam is:

1. Explain what sociologist Howard S. Becker meant when he said, "it is not the act

itself, but the reaction to the act, that make something deviant."



When the sociologist named Howard S. Becker said, "it is not the act itself, but the reaction to

the act, that make something deviant." He meant that the act itself might not be considered

deviant, but society's portrayal of it makes it such. In Becker's most famous book, Outsiders

(1963), he describes deviant behavior as behavior that does not conform to societal norms and

values and is thus regarded undesirable by society. What is deviant in one culture may be

considered normal in another. Becker identified four types of behavior: unjustly accused,

conforming, pure deviant, and secret deviant. While you do not have to breach the law

physically, deviant conduct might include things like drunkenness, rebellion, and lying.

Typically, more emphasis is placed on street crimes, leading to a misunderstanding of the scope

of significant deviance, such as white-collar crime. In the United States, for example, a person

doing white-collar crimes like embezzlement vs. those on the street committing robbery are two

different types of deviance. Deviants are more likely to be described as those who lack power.

When you look at celebrities, politicians, and higher-ranking officials, these individuals very

seldom must be concerned and can generally bribe their way out of problems. Although this does

not seem fair or ethical, this is the America we live in, where money can buy you out of your

problems. Becker's work on deviance has cemented his reputation as a pioneer of labeling theory.
