The murder of Yasin Ahmed was at the root of a drug trade in Bristol. All defendants of the crime
were males over the age of 21, with a reoffending history of robberies, assault and drug
trafficking. In order to distinguish an appropriate intervention, it is of upmost importance to
analyse the trends and patterns in the behaviours of the defendants and typical reasonings behind
usual crimes of this type.
Murder is to kill one unlawfully, this case closed on the verdict that all the defendants are
sentenced to life imprisonment as a consequence of their actions, with aspects of the crime scene
adding further years to sentencing such as weapons bought along suggesting the assault was
premediated with an alternative motive for the crime “a murder done for gain” which in this case
was a financial gain as they planned to take over the Class A drug trade in Bristol.
All defendants of the murder had been previously convicted of assault of some type which can
outline an important trend in these defendants which can be applied and identified on a
psychological perspective in other areas of their lives. Previous research (e.g MoJ, 2012a)
suggests that prior offending history is linked to further reoffending with the crime type being
identified as a predictor in the reoffence (robbery, burglary). This is an important point to analyse
as studies show that those who commit lesser crimes see themselves as “good people who made a
mistake” (Ministry of Justice, 2014) rather than offenders, which creates a division and hierarchy
between inmates consequently which can have a devaluating effect on reoffending individuals as
they feel as though they have ruined their life and feel tied down and defined by their past.
Evidence supports this viewpoint as it is noted that those who are released from jail struggle with
accommodation, finances, and integrating their new, improved life (Ministry of Justice, 2014)
that they often fall back into the path of old ways and habits which leads them to re offending.
Despite this, statistics are still proven that since 2007/2008 re-offending rates have dropped by
over 5% by those being supervised via probation (Ministry of Justice, 2020), prisoners with no
support or curfews were observed to have a similar trend as seen in the Figure 1.
Figure 1: Proportion of offenders who re-offended during the years of 2007 to 2018 (Ministry of
Justice, 2020).
In addressing intervention, time in prison is vital for the individuals as they have a long history of
reoffending making them a potential threat to society. I feel that while in prison they should have
