1. According to realism, self-serving countries govern global affairs in the light oftheir national interests only, while trying to distribute power and spheres of
influence on the global stage characterized by general anarchy.
2. There is a direct correlation between power and limitations with an increase of
power being accompanied by a decrease in the number of limitations.
3. Realism failed to provide a proper explanation or foresee such pivotal changes of
the global political structure as the end of the Cold War.
4. Unlike realism, liberalism approaches the global stage as a system based on
cooperation and codependency between countries with an ultimate objective of
establishing order and collaboration worldwide. The basic constituents of
liberalism are shared power and institutions, which aim to assist the actors on the
global stage to both preserve their national security and promote international
cooperation. It is possible to say that liberalism is the best opposing alternative to
realism. Whereas realism perceives the global stage as a purely anarchic structure,
forcing countries to compete for power and influence, liberalism moves focus
from power politics towards the possibility of international cooperation. In this
regard, the fundamental principles of realism are grounded on the impossibility of
changes due to anarchy, security issues, and a struggle for power. On the contrary,
as Dunne et al. emphasize, the main idea of liberalism for the countries being
better off now than before (2016) plays a crucial part in opting for absolute gains
in a peaceful, collaborative way rather than pursuing relative gains of power and
influence. In other words, the biggest difference between realism and liberalism is
