P6 Explain why meeting the needs of the individuals requires the involvement of different agencies

In this assignment I will explain why meeting the needs of the individuals requires the
involvement of different agencies. I will explain different agencies that will be involved in
Valerie’s and Billy’s case studies. Multi agencies consist of two or more agencies involved.
Agencies such as Mind, Mental health foundation, Shelter, Mencap, NICE, NHS, PHE, CQC,
CCG and HSE would be involved in Valerie’s and Billy’s case studies.

Care Study 1: Valerie B. aged 24 years

Valerie B. was admitted to the community hospital, following surgery for her appendix which
burst before she could reach hospital. Valerie has mental health problems which began when
her parents died when she was six years old. Valerie’s surgery was complicated due to her
being obese. She has low self-esteem and cannot see why she needs to lose weight or
change her lifestyle. Valerie lives in flat provided by a housing association, but has been
bullied by local teenagers because of her obesity. Valerie’s surgical wound is healing, but she
does not want to go home because she is afraid that the bullying will start again. She is
unemployed and receives Universal benefit. Valerie has a hearing impairment but has never
been assessed for any support to improve her hearing. Valerie is a vegetarian.

Case study 4: Billy G. aged 18 years

Billy is homeless and was admitted to the community hospital by a passing paramedic, when
he had an asthma attack in the street. The city hospital did not have beds and so a place was
found in the community hospital. Billy left home following an argument with his mother’s
partner, which resulted in a violent fight between Billy and the man. He has been living on
the streets since this incident. The weather is cold and damp which contributed to the
asthma attack. Billy has a visual impairment and finds street living difficult. He cannot clearly
read road signs or find his way around the city easily. Billy has complained about stomach
pains since being admitted to hospital, which could be due to him living mainly on food from
rubbish bins, thrown out by local restaurants. Billy cannot go back home from hospital,
because his mother has changed the locks and has refused to visit him.

Billy and Valerie were admitted in the community hospital meaning they both were involved
with the NHS agency. The NHS is responsible for helping Billy and Valerie to improve their
health and wellbeing. Their role is to prevent poor health and promote healthy living
essential to reduce health inequalities1. The NHS would have delivered Billy and Valerie with
the appropriate treatment and medication in order to improve their conditions and help
them live a healthy and normal life. The NHS would have assisted Billy and Valerie with a
multidisciplinary team such as involving an Astamatic nurse in Billy’s multidisciplinary team
and a General practitioner in Valerie’s multidisciplinary team to help them meet their
specific needs and to support them through their wellbeing process. This would have
benefited both the individuals as they would receive the right treatment which would
improve their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing allowing Valerie and Billy to live an
independent life. For example, the Practitioner would discuss and review treatment as well
as prescribe medication and provide preventative care. This would allow her to receive the

most suitable treatment for her condition leading Valerie to improve her health and
wellbeing resulting in an improvement in her quality of life. Similarly, the Asthmatic nurse
would support Billy G by making sure he takes the correct medication on time and follow
his action plan2.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is an independent regulation to register health and
adult social care providers in England and to inspect and monitor outgoing treatment to
ensure standards are being met3. This would pursue health and social care services such as
hospitals to make sure Billy’s and Valerie’s treatment standards are met. This would allow
them to receive the best possible treatment therefore enabling their treatment to be
effective leading to better health conditions and allowing them to live a stable life. For
example, they would ensure Valerie receives the best and right treatment for her mental
health condition such as having access to a Psychiatrist. Similarly, they would ensure Billy
receives the right specialist and equipment for his astamtic condition for example having
access to a Asthmatic nurse and inhaler.

The Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) commission most of the hospital and
community NHS services in the local areas for which they are responsible. Commissioning
involves deciding what services are needed for diverse local populations, and ensuring that
they are provided4. They work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for the local
community by developing a joint needs assessment and strategy for improving public health 5.
This would improve health and social services conditions therefore improving provided
services. This would improve Billy’s and Valerie’s treatment and services resulting in better
and effective treatment. This would enable them to recover quickly resulting in better and
healthy wellbeing. This agency would ensure the community hospital that Valerie and Billy is
admitted in is providing them with the best outcomes by developing a joint needs
assessment and strategy for improving public health.

The NICE agency would also get involved in Billy’s and Valerie’s multidisciplinary team as
their role is to improve the outcomes for individuals using the NHS and other public health
and social services. They produce evidence based guidance and service for health and social
care practitioners6. This agency follows the National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence legislation which was set up in 1999 to help prevent ill health and promote
healthier lifestyles. It provides national guidance and advice to improve health and social care
therefore they main role is to to improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other
public health and social care services7. This would benefit Billy and Valerie as they will make
such that both these individuals receive the right treatment and care for their conditions.
