a.) Management refers to the art of achieving goals through people. Managers are
therefore expected to ensure that the correct staff is doing the correct work, thus
managers are expected to ensure greater productivity. For example a school manager
or principle is appointed to make sure that the school runs effectively.
b.) Leadership refers to the process by which an individual influences others to accomplish
or achieve an objective and directs a group or organisation in a way that it makes it
more cohesive. For example, leadership includes organizing a study group and/or
spotting a problem at work and finding a solution for it.
c.) Governance refers to determining the policy and rules by which the school is to be
organised and includes ensuring that such rules and policies are carried out
accordingly, in terms of both the law and the budget of the school. An example of
governance in a school could be setting a code of conduct for learners or putting in
place regulations for the dress code.
Question 2:
Discuss the roles of manager in educational institutions, paying more attention in
primary schools in your own community. (10)
There are five major roles of a manager in any educational institution. They include
prevoyance, to organise, to command, to coordinate and to control. Prevoyance or planning
refers to examining the future and then drawing up a plan of action. To organise refers to
making preparations and make optimum use of the resources required, therefore enabling
the successful carrying out of plans. To command refers to upholding activities among
personnel and giving clear instructions of what is expected. To coordinate refers to
harmonising and unifying all activities and efforts of the school so everyone is working
together. To control refers to ensuring that everything is done according to the established
rules and expressed commands.

Critically discuss the roles of the School Governing Body in comparison with that of
the School Management Team. Substantiate your answer by giving practical
examples in Foundation Phase. (10)
The school governing body is a statutory body of parents, educators, non-teaching staff and
learners who seek to work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of the
school community. Roles of the governing body include:
Deciding on an admissions policy for the school.
Deciding on a language policy for the school.
Deciding on what religious practices will be followed at the school.
Deciding on the times for the school day.
Adopting a code of conduct for learners which set out disciplinary procedures.
