The Manhunt by Simon Armitage
Context
● The manhunt was originally aired as part of a channel 4 documentary in which the
painful truth of lives damaged beyond help is shown.
● In 1992-1995 there was conflict on whether Bosnia should stay in the Yugoslav
federation.
● The Manhunt is read by Laura, wife of Eddie Beddoes, who served as a
peacekeeper. Dramatic Monologue from Laura's perspective due to Eddie’s post
traumatic stress returning from the Bosnian war. Eddie was discharged due to
injury and depression. Describes her experience on her husband’s return and the
effect on their relationship.
Key Quotations
● “The Manhunt” suggests a chase or searching for something or that he is lost.-
Laura’s search for his true nature and Eddie’s search for himself after returning
from war physically and psychologically scarred.
● Images of delicate materials such as ‘porcelain’ and ‘silk’ imply vulnerability and
beauty.
● Broken body parts- ‘grazed heart’, ‘broken ribs’ suggest human casualties of war.
● “Only then did I come close”- a journey through his pain and healing, she is finally
closer to catching him, a journey through his pain and healing & reconciliation as
a couple.
● “Handle and Hold”- child like
● “Let me trace”- patience with mental state
● “Trace” and “explore” suggest that she is no longer familiar with him.
● “Frozen river”- scarred from war, emotional trauma, drying up of his emotions
which used to flow like a river but are now unmoved.
● “Ran through his face”- pain, suffering, deeper than surface level
● “Blown hinge”- difficulty to open up to his wife, she has to be sensitive
● “Porcelain”- delicate, fragile
● “Attend”- nurture
● “Fractured rudder”- non - organic feels less alive, he can’t ‘steer’ himself, she has
to guide him
● “Grazed heart”- unable to connect with his wife
● “Foetus”- like having a baby, the couple’s relationship will be forever changed
● “Unexploded”- The wife may be trying to diffuse him, importance of the wife’s
care and delicacy>she has to tread carefully to not trigger PTSD
● “Only then”- this anaphora is repeated four times throughout the poem to show
the slow process of getting him to open up
Structure
● The poem is in couplets and is in fragments representing the phases the wife is
going through.
, ● The couplets may represent the couple’s harmony when they were first reunited.
● The rhyme scheme falters which may reflect on their distancing relationship.
● The layout of the poem resembles a spine which is mentioned as one of his
damaged areas.
● The poem ends as the conducted search draws to a close
