Pride and Prejudice
Connection between the title and the book
Pride and prejudice are the two things that separate Elizabeth and Darcy. Only after Darcy has
swallowed his pride and Elizabeth realizes she was wrong with her prejudices about him they realize
how much they care about each other. This happens at the end of the book. When Bingley and Darcy
are in Hertfordshire to visit Longbourn Darcy and Elizabeth take a lot of walks together. During one
of those walks Darcy asks for the second time if Elizabeth wants to get married and this time she
says 'yes'. They talk openly about all the prejudices they had about each other and their bond grows
very fast.
Main characters
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are the two main characters.
Elizabeth is a young and intelligent woman who has four sisters. She has a sharp tongue and makes
prejudices very quickly. That’s why she immediately has an aversion to Mr. Darcy. During the ball in
Netherfield, they hit upon a short and intense conversation in which they both clearly express their
opinions. Elizabeth finds Darcy proud and arrogant. He also doesn't want to dance with anyone
because he doesn't think most young ladies are good enough. Because of all this Elizabeth doesn't
like him at all.
Mr. Darcy is an rich, good-looking and intelligent man. Towards his friends he’s a friendly person but
others find him proud an arrogant. Throughout this book it becomes clear that he indeed is what
others think of him. He is the one who stands between the love of Bingley and Jane because he finds
her ignorant of her love for Bingley and her social status is too low. But at the end of the book Darcy
realizes that his social status doesn’t make him better than others and he becomes self-aware about
his actions and intentions.
Favourite character
Of course my favourite character is Elizabeth. She is intelligent, independent and I think it’s very
brave of her to reject marriage proposals for the time in which she lives. She could’ve accepted
Collins’s proposal so her sisters and mother didn’t have to move if her father would die. But she
rejected him, she wants to marry out of love and not so her sisters would benefit from it. I find her
way of thinking very modern and not something women in her time did. And at the end of the book
she and Darcy both have to swallow their pride and prejudice and for me swallowing my pride is very
hard to do. So I have a lot of respect for her that she’s capable of doing that.
Character development
Darcy and Elizabeth both struggle with pride and prejudice. Darcy has too much pride and Elizabeth
is too quickly prejudiced. After their first encounter Darcy finds Elizabeth not good enough for him
and Elizabeth dislikes him a lot. But they still fall in love with each other but neither of them realizes.
But the letter Darcy´s written to Elizabeth after she refused his proposal changes everything for her.
She realizes that´s she was to prejudiced and that he´s actually a decent and gentle man.
Darcy on the other hand is trying to overcome his pride you can see that when he gives Wickham
money so he marries Lydia. At the beginning of this story Darcy would never help Elizabeth by giving
