,Chapter 1: Introduction
1. Motivations
Mobility and logistics are needed in our lives otherwise you could not move from one place to another.
Both freight transport and passenger transport are needed in our daily lives. Problem is of course that
it comes with quiet a lot of cost for society. We have the local emissions due to a lot of road transport
which is hampering our health, the CO2 emissions that comes with the fuel combustion engines that
are being used, accidents, congestion, etc. All these external costs are something that can be done in
another way, and that is what this course is about. How can we come to a more sustainable mobility
and logistics system?
- Logistics and mobility are essential aspects of the economy.
- Transport also generates a lot of negative external effects (emissions, climate change, noise
nuisance and congestion).
- Environmental objectives will be challenging in the years to come for the transport sector and
appropriate solutions need to be implemented.
2. Expertise from MOBI Research Group
That is also the mission of the Research Group the professors are in called MOBI. It is interdisciplinary:
they are working together with the engineering faculty, but also with the economic faculty.
Their mission is to support and study the transition towards a more sustainable mobility and logistics
system.
They are organised in 5 different research groups:
- Battery innovation centre
- Sustainable logistics
- Electric & autonomous vehicles
- Urban mobility
- Sustainable energy communities
o All transition towards something more sustainable is really going hand in hand with a
transition in the energy sector, so in this department they bring those two together.
Over the years, they have been working on different tools and instruments to study in these fields like
life cycle assessment, multicriteria analysis (a tool to bring different stakeholders together), transport
models, etc. This knowledge is also brought to use in this course, topic wise as well as the instruments
they are using a lot in their research which can be useful for use in the future.

,3. Hackathon
This was first used by developers of apps. They were gathering during weekends to work on the
development and to understand the needs of the end users. It was very intense since they had to work
from scratch.
In this course, we also will organise a hackathon. The goal is to try to come up with a new business
concept that can improve the sustainability of mobility or logistics. This will be done through
different sessions where we will be guided to develop such a business concept. First by understanding
the needs of the customers and then try to find a solution that answer these needs. It will be done in
teams of 4 (2 from the VUB, 2 from Gothenburg). At the end, we will have to pitch the idea in front of
a jury (max. 5 min). We will have to convince them that our concept is great on 3 different criteria’s
being sustainable, innovative (it should be something different/new), realistic.
Afterwards, there is also the possibility to go to an international student challenge by Mpact if you
perform very well.

, In order to be able to define clearly what the problem is for the users that you want to solve, the
following format should be used:
- How might we ACTION WHAT for WHOM in order to CHANGE SOMETHING
It must be ‘just right’, not too narrow or not too broad:
- Too narrow: HMW create a cone to eat ice cream without dropping? This question implies
that redesigning the cone is the solution. However, the team should be thinking more broadly
about a range of possible solutions.
- Too broad: HMW redesigning dessert? This question doesn’t give enough direction because it
doesn’t imply a starting point or immediately help people generate ideas around one category
of desserts.
- Just right: HMW redesign ice cream to be more portable? This question is scoped properly
because it frames the challenge but does not imply a solution. Rather it allows people to
brainstorm multiple solutions.
