Hello everyone, welcome to my presentation which is about Shakespeare's tragedies. Today
I’m going to talk about what a tragedy is and its characteristics. I am also going to discuss
the tragedy of Hamlet. Hamlet was one of Shakespeare's most popular tragedy plays and it
was also the longest as well as the most complicated of all the Shakespearean plays that
were written. First, I’m going to tell you some information beforehand so you will know what
a tragedy is. Lastly, I will discuss a few characters and lastly,

Now I will tell you some information beforehand. A tragedy is a kind of drama that is based
on human suffering and mainly on events that ensue the main character, called the tragic
hero. Tragedies always have catastrophic endings, in which most of the time the main
character dies. Shakespeare wrote his plays with great, noble characters with fatal flaws that
led to suffering and their downfall. So what is a fatal flaw? A fatal flaw is a literary term that
refers to a personality trait of the protagonist that leads to his or her downfall due to personal
weakness.

The fatal flaw of Hamlet is procrastination, his endless doubting and inability to commit to a
course of action, leads to his downfall and eventually the death of many others and himself.
Hamlet had actually many chances to kill Claudius, for instance when he was praying at the
church, he could not act due to his overthinking.

Comic reliefs were also often used in Shakespeare's tragedies. Comic relief is a comic
scene in a tragedy, which is used to relieve the tension that is created by a tragic situation.
There are many comic reliefs in Hamlet. One for instance is when hamlet said: my mother is
just trying to save money by serving the same food at the wedding as the funeral.

Now that I’ve told you more about what a tragedy is, I’m going to discuss a few characters.
Let’s first start with Hamlet. Hamlet is a young prince from Denmark and he is the
protagonist of the tragedy. Hamlet is a reflective and thoughtful young man who has studied
at the University of Wittenberg. Hamlet is often indecisive and hesitant, but sometimes he
also behaves carelessly and impulsively. When he does act, it is with sudden quickness and
little or no purpose. You can see that when he stabbed Polonius through a curtain because
he thought that it was Claudius who was hiding under it.

Claudius is the king of Denmark and Hamlet’s uncle. He is also the play’s antagonist. An
antagonist is a character who is opposing the protagonist in literature. Claudius contrasts
strongly with the other male characters in the play. Whereas most of the other important men
in hamlet are preoccupied with ideas of justice, revenge, and moral balance, Claudius is
determined to maintain his power.

Gertrude is the mother of Hamlet and she is also the queen of Denmark. Gertrude loves her
son deeply, but she is a vulnerable woman who seeks affection and status rather than
morality or the truth.
