As you all probably know there was a big fued going on between the Capulets and
Montagues. This caused a lot of the violence in the lifes of Romeo and juliet. The play of
Romeo and Juliet opens with Samson boasting that he is a violent man. When some
Montague servants appear, he draws his sword and asks his companion Gregory to start a
quarrel that might lead to a fight. This opening establishes that Verona is a place where
violence can break out over nothing. Samson and Gregory and their Montague opponents
are all afraid of breaking the law, because the punishment for fighting is every bit as violent
as the fighting itself. From the beginning of the play, all the young men involved in the feud
are trapped between two threats of violence: the violence of their enemies and the violence
of the Prince, who has threatened to execute anyone who continues the feud. (3 slides)
Tempers among the young men of Verona are clearly short, as further demonstrated when
Tybalt spots Romeo at the Capulet ball and spoils for a fight. Lord Capulet succeeds in
temporarily calming Tybalt, but the latter’s fury continues to smolder until the top of Act III,
when he tries to provoke a duel with Romeo, fatally wounds Mercutio, and ends up slain by
Romeo’s hand. Though tragic, this turn of events also seems inevitable. Given how the feud
between the two families continuously fans the flames of hatred and thereby maintains a
low-burning rage, such flaring outbursts of violence appear inescapable. Violence is one of
