Use the observation schedule to note down your observations of the following for each period:
Period 1
The classroom (e.g., is there enough seating, is it clean, etc.)
The classroom is very clean and neat and there is plenty of space and seating for all students.
The atmosphere (e.g., is it inviting, interesting, conducive to learning, well-resourced or not, etc.)
It is a very inviting, brightly colourful classroom and well resourced. It is clean and there are 3
bins, 2 for paper recycling and 1 for “other” rubbish.
The subject: Mathematics
The teaching approach (e.g., direct instruction, interactive learning, etc) and how learners respond to
this:
Direct instruction which the learners followed well. The teacher also encouraged interactive
learning in the way she discussed the work with the students. She asked the students questions
about the work and they responded well.
The expectations the teacher has of learners (how they must enter, where they must sit, what they may or
may not do, how they may participate) and how learners respond to this:
The teacher expects students to be standing in two lines (1 for boys and 1 for girls) waiting quietly
outside the classroom. Once the teacher has entered, the learners may enter, stand nicely behind
their assigned seats from the beginning of the year, they wait to greet the teacher and then they
may be seated. Once seated they take out their math books and wait for further instruction. Once
the lesson has begun the students are free to discuss and ask questions with the teacher. The
students are very used to this process and therefore did it very well.
Time spent on task (how much of the period is used for teaching and learning) and what learners do if
there is time left.
The first 30 minutes was spent with the teacher explaining and teaching the topic to the learners,
the next 15 minutes was spent on working through examples together as a whole class and the
last 15 minutes was spent on individual work, anything that was not completed was sent home
for homework.
Learner interactions.
All the learners became very involved as soon as the teacher began discussing the topic and
working through examples with the class.
