Hunger without global food shortageWorld hunger is not an unknown subject nowadays. It is seen on social media, on tv and
mostly on the news. Underweighted and sick children are mostly shown and create an
empathetic and compassionate feeling among people. Various organizations, such as
UNICEF, try to inform people about this tragedy. People are being encouraged to help, for
example, to stop wasting food. However, people should not only focus on the consequences.
It is important to focus on the cause of world hunger. The cause has not much to do with
global food shortage. This essay discusses the statement that globally, more than enough
food is produced to feed everyone.
Mainly, hunger is a consequence of poverty and a malfunctioning government. Some people
live in poor conditions and do not have much money to spend. This might be because of little
employment or some people might not be able to work as a result of illness. These people
cannot provide themselves with enough food. Adding that not all countries have a good
functioning government. Not all people receive help from the government when needed. For
example, in South Africa, the government is seen as corrupt. Poor people do not get any
governmental help and will keep living in these conditions. This is not similar to the
Netherlands, where people are likely to receive payment when they cannot meet basic
needs. Hunger does not have anything to do with global food shortage, but with money and
the government's help.
Equally important are conflicts in the world. In most cases, war or other international conflicts
lead to hunger. Countries that deal with war, might reduce the production of food. Besides
war, countries are more dependent on each other nowadays, because of globalization.
Countries trade with each other internationally. Many food is exported to countries’ trading
partners. As a consequence of war, other countries might stop the export of food to a trading
partner, which leads to food shortage in that country.
Others argue that globally, there would not be enough food, because the population is
growing. There would not be enough land to grow food. The world population is indeed
growing, but so is technology. Nowadays there are many efficient and fast ways to grow
food. People are specialized in growing food on little ground. Besides, tasks have mostly
been taken over by machines, which is effective for big food production. The way of working
has become more rational. The population might be growing, but so is our knowledge.
In conclusion, there is globally more than enough food produced to feed everyone. People’s
knowledge has increased by time and there are lots of efficient ways to produce food. The
reason not every individual has access to it is because of poverty, a malfunctioning
government and conflicts in the world.
