Pamela by Richardson
Literally development more than political one?
Modernization > democratization (part of the rise of novel)
Writers who have no literary skills made Self-help book: list of things of what people should do & not do.
Example: tips and advices to young rural who goes to cities to work.
For young girls: like Pamela, who starts working for Mrs. B
These advices are a help to how these girls should deal with any situation “community”. (Who could they
get help from!)
- Pamela was not a literary project it was a guide for young girls who work for rich families. To teach
them how to act in certain situations > ex: Harassment
Plot: It starts when Pamela employee lady B dies & her son come. He took notice of Pamela and kept on
harassing her even when she kept on refusing him.
- No I only respect you!
- No I won’t be your mistress or sleep with you.
Harassment > something in the 18th century that wasn’t acknowledged
Men didn’t take women “NO” seriously, as they believed they have the right for everything.

How is she facing these young men who are following her?

,#this is a full hand project, the author invented the name Pamela for this novel: about one daughter in
town & parents living in village.
Richardson gave a group of letters to his friend - the friend liked it and told him to add more events,
drama and make it nastier. And as he write he made it more complex
The idea: To make readers appreciate these young girls
The purpose: is to help these young girls
- The plot was not to evoke sex to readers (there wasn’t no need for him to do that)
- His aims was to highlight the problems in society
18th century didn’t acknowledge this as a problem. We had to wait until the 20th century for harassment
to be treated as a problem and the danger of it was acknowledged, now these issue are taken seriously.
As Richardson continue to add more, he unfortunately got carried away he said:
If you are a strong woman under these situations there are rewards for you in the end like the proposal of
Mr.B at the end.
He romanticize sexual assault accidentally??
- It is not well written but contain a strong message.
Q: didn’t include any morality?
A mix of reactions to Pamela, some people protested while some didn’t.
Joseph Andrew > wrote Henry Flending
As a reaction to Pamela, since he couldn’t believe such rubbish got successful

, <The reaction of the female heroine was disappointing> Pamela, the female protagonist, has a dismal
reply. She could have maintained her purity by resisting Mr. B's actions till the end, but she decided to
give up, fell in love with him, and married him.
How Richardson contribute to the rise of novel?
Mixing old & new ???
