Evaluating the recruitment and selection process of a large
business
In this assignment I have been asked to evaluate how a chosen business
processes their recruitment and selection along with the legislations and
the government laws. The business I had chosen is JD Sports , their
whole purpose is to provide customers with clothes from the sports and
streetwear department and providing them locally as the brands they sell
dont have as many stores here in the UK. The retail business is very
popular as they are known for the sector they operate in and the business
is massive as they have stores located in nearly every city including some
stores overseas and the business has got over 50,000 employees.

JD Sports had first started in 1981 , opening their first store in
Manchester selling sports clothes that customers could wear if they had
played a sport or were a fan of a certain club that they loved. After
opening their first store , JD sports in 1996 had gone public and onto the
stock market meaning people could buy their shares and invest into the
business.
In 2005 , JD Sports had sold more than half of the business to Pentland
Group who are now the parent investors / owners of JD Sports and this
had allowed JD Sports to slowly grow since they started. The business had
grown after selling half of their business as having the parent investor
allowed JD Sports to open many more stores up in the UK which allowed
them to gain that recognition of being the best sports and streetwear
fashion retailer. Also , getting their stores set in the UK JD Sports decided
to open some stores overseas as they have got stores in the US ,
Malaysia , Thailand , France and Australia including the Asia Pacific
region. Besides JD Sports opening stores up for themselves and
developing more , they had decided to invest more into other businesses
as they own Scotts , Tessuti and bought most of the shares of
Footasylum. This retail business is always developing for their customers
and for themselves as the business wants many ways to make profit.

Unit 8 - Assignment 1
Businesses from all sectors would need employees and as they are to be
the face of the company interacting with customers internally and
externally. JD Sports being a massive company they would have a HR
department which is very important because if the business were not to
have this department , they wouldn't be able to hire the right people for
the company as this department would need to provide the new
colleagues with training and other additional skills.
This department is very key for the business as it's like the research and
development department but just for the staff whereas the other looks
into more depth for business. However they both can help each other as
businesses are always improving and innovating , the business would
need to hire certain people that will allow the business to achieve the new
objective with their skills and knowledge. So this department is key as it
allows the business to get its right employees for the right reasons.
JD Sports being a massive business , they are always growing and want
to develop into new ways that will allow them to work effectively and
efficiently along with the customers having the same energy of shopping
there with no fuss or delays. For the business to accomplish this they
would have to hire colleagues that will allow the business to succeed as
they say the colleagues are the face of the business and if the business
does not hire the right people it could lead the business to a negative fall
down as the customer didn't get the expected business vibe from the
colleague so they had told everyone that the business is that bad. So the
business needs to make sure that they hire the right people as they dont
want the company to have a bad reputation because the bad reputation
can affect the business very badly.
Also JD Sports being a high expected retailer , during seasonal times JD’s
tend to get busy as they sell high quality branded clothes and they allow
customers to get some clothes at a discounted price as other businesses
won't have sold these products or at the price that's being offered better
from somewhere else. So during these times demand for stock and
employees would be high as well as some students might be on term
holidays and they would maybe want a part time job that's flexible for
them.
However , the business has been running for so many years now and
getting new colleagues is what the business has to do because some
colleagues only want to work part time and some colleagues work full
time. I believe people tend to go into the retail area as they may love it,
