Writing - Tips
• For the title and headings, use capitalised letters for every new word! Do not use “:” after each
title and heading!
• Try to avoid negative titles, it makes the reader wanting to skip the text.
• Make sure your titles aren’t too long.
• Only use headings for Reports!
• Use clear paragraphs with space between them.
• Use one topic per paragraph.
• Use paragraphs for every type of writing exercise.
• Use connectors (use them between paragraphs and in paragraphs) —> “and, but, so, because”
are basic connectors. “As you know, anyway, however, as you can guess” are advanced
connectors.
• Try to use connectors when you’re switching subject, this helps the reader understand the
text.
• Don’t start a sentence with “But” and “And”.
• Don’t use “Gonna”, “Wanna”, etc. You may say “Don’t”, “Won’t”, etc.
• Try to avoid simple nouns such as “Good” and “Hard”, but instead use “Amazing”, “Complete”,
“Correct”, “Challenging”, etc.
• Colons (:) are used in sentences or followed by a vertical list. Correct example: “Wendy only
likes two flavours of ice cream: vanilla and chocolate.” False example: Wendy’s favourite
flavours of ice cream are: vanilla and chocolate.” To correct this, use “the following” or “as
follows” right before the colon. Another correct example: “The lady said: “Why are you being
so rude?””.
