, Stress
Stress is normally assumed to be a negative emotion that would have a massive impact on your life.
This is right but there is also another side of stress, stress is divided into two different categories
these are Eustress and Distress. Eustress is seen as the positive form of stress, this is where you
enjoy the stress of being in a team as all you want to do is achieve. an example of this form of stress
would be the start of a training program where you are excited about growth of yourself within
sport and the growth in maybe muscles throughout the program that you are on. Distress is the
negative side of stress that most people assume stress is all about, this is where you cant deal with
the stress and pressure. An example of this form of stress would be that something would be too
much for a player to deal with for example not having a certain answer on what the outcome of an
event would be and this would be too much for them to deal with.

The effects that stress can have on performance can go in either way, but this is dependent of the
person that is participating. The effects on performance can be split into 4 different stages. Putting
this into the perspective of a penalty in a football match stage 1 would be the demand and in this
case the demand is the last penalty in a shoot out. Within the next stage it could go one of either 2
ways, the positive way or the negative way, this stage would be the perception of the stress, the
positive perception would be a challenge the negative would be threat. An influence on what way a
person would go could be their personality, if they have a strong personality and are very out going
then they are likely to go the positive way, if they are shy and quiet they are likely to go the negative
way. Stage 3 includes the increasing of arousal levels, if you were to go in the positive direction you
would have Eustress and have increased energy and motivation, if you were to go in the opposite
direction then you would face distress and this would include increased worry. stage 4 is the
outcome stage, if you went in the positive direction would have an increase in performance however
if you were to go in the negative direction you would have reduced performance.

Causes of Stress
there are a number of things that could cause people to be stressed, the situation that someone is in
does not determine the stress that they will face, some athletes will deal with stress in different
ways and will respond to things in different ways. you can split stress into two different categories,
internal and external.

Internal things that could cause stress could include:

 An illness
 Over self critical, from type a personality
 Not having enough sleep
 Psychological factors, for example, worry

External things could include things like:

 The environment that you are in
 Life events, for example death
 Day to day hassles
 Negative people around you, for example rude people

Within sport there are many different things that could cause you to be stressed, things like the
sport that you play could cause you stress, the occupation that you have could also be a major cause
of stress. However, some people use sport as a way of dealing with stress, people use sport as a way
of getting out of the way to clear their head and to some times let stress out by taking part in sports
